Washington horse rescue farm celebrates thoroughbred’s birthday
WASHINGTON — The Humane Organization Representing Suffering Equines (H.O.R.S.E. of Connecticut), celebrating its 40th year, will hold a Birthday Celebration for Fiona from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Rain date is Sunday
Due to new insurance restrictions, children under 12 are not permitted on the farm, an announcement said.
Others are invited to celebrate the 14th birthday for Fiona, a registered thoroughbred mare that was rescued as a starvation case in 2013. Due to complications from her former neglect, Fiona can no longer be ridden.
Available for sponsor, she loves treats and going for hand walks on the trails, the announcement said. Gift suggestions would include horse cookies, carrots, apples and granola bars. Potential donors may also contribute toward her spring shots ($175), monthly medications ($180) or her wardrobe (shoes $150 or blanket $125).
Gus, a registered thoroughbred gelding, will join the festivities and celebrate his 10th birthday at the same time. Gus came to the farm last spring with a condition called “kissing spine.” Through treatment and conditioning, Gus is now able to be ridden but must have a rider under 150 pounds. Gus is available for lease or adoption to an experienced rider, and he loves all the same snacks that Fiona does, the announcement said
There will be a tour of the farm at noon when visitors will have a chance to meet the farm’s volunteers, as well as the many different horses, ranging from 5 to over 30 years old and from mini to draft.
A tack sale from 10 a.m. to noon will offer saddles, blankets and other equipment. H.O.R.S.E. is a nonprofit organization located at 43 Wilbur Road.
