Positive notes in tumultuous times

- JOANN RYAN

My bookshelves feature a number of inspiring books and articles that have accumulated over the years. One that recently caught my attention was a monthly advisory newsletter from the Chamber Executive. I was struck by these positive notes refreshing and worth noting especially during COVID.

This, too, will pass. “Be ready…don’t pull back and stick your head in the sand…get out and start forming those new relationships and alliances as you prepare for the up cycle.” Be sure to go to the Chamber’s website for the calendar of meetings and events to which you are invited. You will learn from the attendees as they share their challenges and what they have accomplished virtually. There is a place for you!

Stay focused. “Focus on the things you are responsible for…Don’t believe everything you hear or read. Don’t let someone talk you into being less than successful.” The positive always wins especially if you weigh all options and mutually decide with your colleagues the best direction moving forward. Compromise works with thoughtful discussion.

Believe in entrepreneurs. “The American entrepreneurial spirit and creativity will continue to bring exciting new products and services worthy of our capital investment.” I might add worthy of our patronage. We recently have witnessed a number of new, small businesses opening in spite of the current conditions. The Chamber has responded by cre

ating the Restaurant & Retail Coalition to offer the opportunity to meet virtually on a monthly basis to discuss similar needs and to bring in experts that have the resources that are beneficial.

Get tough! “Tough times favor tough people…leverage the force of individuals into a powerful coalition which works when times are good and even harder when they are not.” Evan Berns, President & CEO of Seitz, LLC, recently became Chair of the Manufacturer’s Coalition. He has been working with us to strengthen the partnership with manufacturers, educators and the community. It is vital that we engage students in the process so that they are aware of the job and career choices awaiting once they graduate.

Stick to the mission. “Provide value to accomplish collectively what could not be done individually.”

There is strength in numbers especially when facing this Zoom world and a new way of doing business.

The Government Relations Committee meets on the second Thursday of every month with our legislative delegation and businesses to review the proposals presented for consideration.

You are welcome to let your voice be heard.

We are working harder, smarter and more creatively. I know we will make it!
