Police: Man fatally stabbed his mother

STAMFORD — A 25year-old Stamford man has been charged with murder after police say he stabbed his mother to death inside their Stamford apartment.

Winston Weathers was taken into custody in New York late Tuesday in connection with the death of his mother, Denise McLaughlin, 50, who was found dead in her South End apartment on Friday, police said.

“This tragic incident only becomes more tragic as it appears the victim died by the actions of her son,” Capt. Richard Conklin said on Wednesday.

According to Weathers’ arrest warrant, McLaughlin died of multiple stab wounds to the neck and stomach on March 27 — nearly a week before she was discovered by police.

Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Maureen Ornousky said Weathers had checked himself into New York Presbyterian Hospital on Monday, where he was later found by police.

Weathers gave a “full confession” once in the custody of Stamford police, Ornousky said.

Weathers, who was a 2013 graduate of Greenwich High School, had been living with his mother at the Manor Street apartment.

McLaughlin’s upstairs neighbor told police that Weathers was “often drunk or on something,” and he and his mother would often have loud arguments, the warrant said.

Police found evidence of crack cocaine use in Weathers’ bedroom in McLaughlin’s house, according to the warrant.

Four days before the fatal stabbing, on March 23, police responded to the Manor Street home after McLaughlin called to report a disturbance. She told police at the time that Weathers was “possibly high or intoxicated” and causing a scene outside her house, the warrant said.

McLaughlin said Weathers was “actively trying to throw away a good job” and she had kicked him out of the house for a night, the warrant said.

Last Friday, officers found McLaughlin’s body in the first-floor apartment on Manor Street after friends reported that they hadn’t been able to contact her over the course of several days, police said.

Friends told police that McLaughlin owned an apartment building in New York, where she spent a lot of time managing the building’s upkeep. When McLaughlin stopped showing up at the apartment building, her friends in the city grew concerned and contacted police.

Weathers told police that the stabbing had occurred a week before McLaughlin’s body was discovered, Ornousky said. During that week, he went to Boston and New York, where he attempted multiple times to take his own life, she said.

He was held on suicide watch on $2.5 million bond. Based on the circumstances, Stamford Superior Court Judge Kevin Randolph ruled in favor of upholding the bond amount at Weathers’ arraignment Wednesday.
