New farmers market sprouting up in Torrington

- By Emily M. Olson

TORRINGTON — The first Franklin Plaza Farmers Market is set to open Thursday, with much more than just fruits and vegetables.

Organizer Heather Rems Korwin, owner of Sanctuary Power Yoga, has invited a wide array of vendors to participate. “We have farms, food, arts and crafts from local vendors, and in the spirit of community, each week we’ll have different, free activities for families including different movement modalities, like family yoga from 4:30 to 5 p.m., activities from Kidsplay and more,” Korwin said.

The market, from 4-7 p.m., is being sponsored by The Torrington Downtown Partners & Torrington Savings Bank, which donated funding to use the plaza for the season.

Markets are scheduled weekly until the fall, Korwin said.

“We’ll have a monthly drum circle and free music provided by Luckky Entertainment and Rock Yer Block, an organization that brings musicians together to raise awareness around brain injury,” she said.

This week, after the yoga class, Kidsplay Children’s Museum will lead a bilingual storytime, a program that has also been offered at the museum. EdAdvance’s Head Start is presenting a free movement class next week.

Along with Sanctuary Power Yoga, vendors committed to the market include Create Salon & Spa, Nutmeg Fudge, Act Natural, Art by Alyssa Dakota, Bakehouse of Litchfield, Barefoot Books, Batchy Brew, Bear Iron Forge, Casa Paraiso, Crafty Bombshell Designs, Crochet by Robin, Earthheart Farms, Gresczyk Farms, Heather Bell Designs, Kaylan’s Kitchen, Kidsplay, Litchfield County Naturals, Little Dove Botanicals, Lost Ruby Farm, My Dad’s Jewelry, Meadowview Living, Nodine’s

Smokehouse, Paws & Reflect, Rosa Vega Puerto Rican Bakery, Simple Delights Bakery, The BQE, Tonn’s Orchard and Underground Truffles. Not all are scheduled for this week.

“The big farms are waiting until the end of May to come out, because then they’ll have more produce,” Kerwin said.

Developer and downtown property owner Steve Temkin sees the market as a step forward for the city.

“There’s lots coming up and going on,” he said. “The Franklin Plaza’s farmers market, and some other events. Everyone has that good feeling of coming out of the pandemic. They want to appreciate being outside more.”

For Korwin, the start of the market is a new beginning.

“For me, this is not just about putting on a market,” she said. “It’s about creating an opportunity for people to come to Torrington and see what we have to offer, while also supporting the local community with free activities to strengthen health, wellness and connection.”
