Stango Garzone leads newly formed NW United

- By Pete Paguaga

A lot has happened in the Northwest corner since the 2019 season. The four-year old MCW United co-op (Housatonic, Wolcott Tech and Wamogo) broke up. Housatonic joined up with former rivals Gilbert/Northwestern and Wolcott Tech and Wamogo found a new home with Nonnewaug, creating Northwest United.

In four seasons together MCW United went 0-40, the last under coach Jennifer Stango Garzone.

Stango Garzone is now leading the newly formed co-op, which stands to benefit greatly from the foundation of Nonnewaug’s new turf facilities and its contribution of players to the roster.

The Chiefs have had their

share of good players over the years, most notably a 1,000-yard rushing season by Zach Mauro in 2016 or Jarrett Michaels’ 2,500 all-purpose yards at quarterback in 201617.

To that end, Stango Garzone says the offense has plenty of options and skill players to be competitive. “The last few weeks of the preseason have shown strength in both the run and the passing game,” she said.

On defense the group has shown speed, strength and leadership from the linebackers and depth at secondary, she added.

Northwest United will play its first game together on the road against Platt Tech before have it’s home

opener at Nonnewaug in Week 2 against Cheney Tech.
