Region 15 school district welcomes new superintendent
WOODBURY — The Region 14 Board of Education announced this week that Brian Murphy has been appointed as the next Region 14 Superintendent of Schools, after a board vote June 13. His expected start date is Aug. 25.
Murphy comes to Region 14, which serves the towns of Bethlehem and Woodbury, from New Hartford, where he has been superintendent since 2015. Previous to leading the New Hartford district, he was principal at Oxford’s Great Oak Middle School and served in multiple positions at Waterbury public schools and at Sacred Heart High School, where he was Dean of Students. His education career started as a Social Studies teacher at Waterbury’s Crosby High School, according to a statement.
"The board is very excited to start working with Brian Murphy towards our goals in Region 14," said chairman George Bauer, who added that input from residents and the school community helped produce a leadership profile of an ideal candidate.
"Brian clearly stood out during a very thorough interview process as meeting our requirements. He has demonstrated quality leadership, improved student achievement, and smart fiscal responsibilities,”
Bauer said.
Murphy graduated from Post University in Waterbury with a bachelors degree in History and earned a masters in Teaching from Quinnipiac University. He also completed a Sixth Year in Administration program at Sacred Heart University and the Executive Leadership Program at the University of Connecticut. He is on track to earn a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Bridgeport, according to the statement.
“It is an honor to be selected as the next superintendent of Region 14,” said Murphy, who lives in Woodbury. “As a resident and parent in the community, I am grateful to have this opportunity to lead such a wonderful school system. I look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence in serving our students.”
Murphy is replacing Acting Superintendent Wayne McAllister.
He was chosen from a highly qualified pool of 13 applicants from three states that included superintendents and central office personnel. The search was facilitated by consultants from Trumbull-based Cooperative Educational Services, who guided the district’s search committee through the decision-making process by providing a leadership profile based on feedback from the district’s various stakeholders, and facilitating the interview process with candidates. The consultants employed an advanced interview technique proven to demonstrate the candidates’ abilities to be successful in the leadership position by assessing their supervisory skills, qualities, and attributes against the established profile.
