FALLS VILLAGE — Gary Stephan:THISTHERE, featuring new paintings and works on paper, is on view from Saturday to July 24 at the Furnace / Art on Paper Archive, 107 Main Street Falls Village.

An opening reception is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Saturday.

The exhibition at Furnace ± Art on Paper Archive are some of the most reductive works he has made to date. Stephan has been working the language of abstraction for decades and has channeled the pure essentials of line and form.

The selection of works on paper are made with black tape lines of varied thicknesses. A nod to historic connections with Piet Mondrian, and Barnett Newman who used tape in their work, as well as graphic Droodles in pictures books.

He has had solo shows in New York at Mary Boone Gallery, Bykert Gallery, Susan Inglett Gallery, Hirschl and Adler and Marlborough Gallery; in Los Angeles at Margo Leavin Gallery and Daniel Weinberg Gallery; and in Berlin at Galerie Keinzle and Gmeiner among many others. His work can be found in the collections of The Guggenheim Museum of Art, The Metropolitan and the Museum of Modern Art, as well as museums nationwide.

He is the recipient of awards from the National Endowment of the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He teaches in the MFA program at School of Visual Arts in NYC and is currently represented by Kienzle Art Foundation in Berlin.
