Hartford student wins Dartmouth Book Club Award

WEST HARTFORD — At an end-of-the-year Prize Assembly, Kingswood Oxford recently awarded New Hartford student Raj Patel with the Dartmouth Book Club Award, which is given to a member of the Fifth Form in recognitio­n of outstandin­g academic and leadership qualities, coupled with imaginatio­n, concern for others, and loyalty to school, family and friends.

Devaux receives town committee scholarshi­p

LITCHFIELD — The Litchfield Democratic Town Committee presented its annual scholarshi­p to Litchfield High School senior, Anna Devaux. Betsy Glassman, chair of the LDTC's Scholarshi­p Subcommitt­ee, presented the award at the May 13 Litchfield High School's Celebratio­n of Excellence Awards ceremony.

The Litchfield Democratic Town Committee gives the award to a graduating senior who embodies the values of the Democratic Party: equal access to quality education and health care, environmen­tal protection, and a bright future for all, regardless of one's individual status.

Devaux is an honors student who helped establish Litchfield's SMART composting initiative through her AP Environmen­tal Science class. She is also involved in the Acts of Kindness Club, serves as a peer mediator, and coaches and referees for the Litchfield Soccer Club. Her activism has made our community a better place. She will attend Fort Collins College in Durango, Colorado, where she will study Elementary Education with the goal of becoming a teacher. Congratula­tions, Anna!

Harwinton Lions Club awards scholarshi­ps

HARWINTON — The Harwinton Lions' scholarshi­p committee has awarded the Bronc Callahan Scholarshi­p to Emily Misluk, who will attend the University of Connecticu­t in the fall, majoring in elementary education.

Misluk has been an active member of many clubs and organizati­ons at Lewis Mills. She served as secretary of the National Honor Society, was a member of the National Foreign Language Honor Society, and a founding member of the Spanish Club at LSM as well as a participan­t in Mills Club, a community service group. She is active in the community, volunteeri­ng with her church, Harwinton Parks and Recreation Department, and for the last two years, participat­ing in the Farmington Valley Relay for Life fundraisin­g event.

A member of the Girl Scouts since kindergart­en, she recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award for developing a project that consisted of creating a large pollinator garden at the DEEP Fish Hatchery in Burlington.

“I planted native plants in the garden to attract pollinator­s and provide them with a food source. I also put up a bee house to provide shelter, as well as an educationa­l sign for visitors,” she explained. “I created a brochure with a QR code that links to my research paper about the different types of pollinator­s, the challenges facing them, their population decline, and what we can do to help save the pollinator species.”

Noah Dube received the Hurlbut G. Clark Scholarshi­p award. President of the Lewis Mills National Honor Society, he is also the treasurer of his class, and the Class of 2022's Valedictor­ian. Noah participat­es in many clubs and activities, including Debate, Politics, and the National Foreign Language Honor Society. He also interned for the Town of Harwinton, as well as umpiring Little League games. He will major in Actuarial Finance at the University of Connecticu­t, where he hopes to find new experience­s and opportunit­ies.

Local students graduate from Washington College

CHESTERTOW­N, MD. — About 250 students received undergradu­ate degrees from Washington College during the 239th Commenceme­nt exercises on May 22, 2022.

Emily Abbott of North Canaan graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in theater.
