What’s that construction along 8th Avenue in Eugene?
Project: Roadway improvements for storm sewer pipes, stormwater planters, protected bikeways, corner sidewalk and curb ramps, two new four-way stops and road resurfacing along 8th Avenue in Eugene.
Location: The project is concluding work on 8th Avenue between Mill and Lincoln Streets and construction is now underway between Willamette Street and Lincoln Street.
The city of Eugene is working on numerous roadway projects to improve road conditions and safety around town.
Since summer 2023, 8th Avenue has been under construction. The work nearing completion for phases one and two of the project includes improvements to storm sewer pipes, reconstructing sidewalk and curb ramps, installing protected bike lanes and repaving portions of the road.
Additional work for phase three of the project includes the installation of four-way stops at the intersections of both 8th Avenue and Willamette Street and Olive Street and Lincoln Street.
This rejuvenation of the 8th Avenue streetscape is funded in large part by the 2017 Street Preservation Bond. Eugene’s Transportation Planning Team integrated public feedback and ideas collected in the 2019 Central Eugene InMotion process about how to improve transportation and increase sustainable travel in the downtown area.
The completed project will support a walkable streetscape for downtown residents and visitors by providing accessible and pedestrian-friendly blocks, protected bike lanes, two-way travel for cars and an improved road surface. The final vision of the 8th Avenue streetscape improvement project come fall is to see 8th Avenue from Mill Street to Lincoln Street as a two-way street with complete bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
Drivers should expect to see lane reductions and shifts during construction. They should try to use alternate routes and plan ahead for congestion and delays when possible. Pedestrians can expect to encounter detours and temporarily closed crosswalks.
