Philadelph­ia cop stable after shooting

PHILADELPH­IA — Authoritie­s say an off-duty Philadelph­ia police officer is in stable condition after being shot by an assailant.

Police spokesman Lt. John Stanford says the officer was shot once, in the right shoulder, early Sunday morning.

He says in a release that 46-year-old officer Robert Penn was getting out of his car at 7300 Brentwood when a man approached him, muttered something and opened fire.

The attacker, who is black and about 5-foot-8, then fled the scene.

Stanford says the 24-year veteran of the force is hospitaliz­ed in stable condition.

Penn is married with a 9-year-old daughter and a 17-yearold son.
