Utley, Dodgers rally past Rockies in five-run 9th

-

Chase Utley drove in the goahead run with a double in Los Angeles’ five-run ninth and the Dodgers overcame a crucial error by Yasiel Puig to beat the Colorado Rockies 12-10 on Sunday.

Trailing 10-7 in the ninth, the Dodgers lit up Rockies closer Jake McGee (01), with Trayce Thompson scoring the tying run on a wild pitch. Utley followed with an RBI double. All this after the Dodgers squandered an early six-run lead.

Joe Blanton (2-1) earned the win by getting two outs in the eighth. Kenley Jansen struck out Trevor Story to pick up his ninth save and end a wacky game at Coors Field. CUBS 9, REDS 0 >> Anthony Rizzo drove in four runs with his 10th career twohomer game, Jason Hammel pitched six scoreless innings and the Chicago Cubs routed the Cincinnati Reds 9-0 on Sunday to improve to 14-5 for the first time in 47 years.

Tommy La Stella hit two doubles and his first homer of the season and Jason Heyward had four hits and 3 RBIs as the Cubs rebounded from their worst loss of the season, 13-5, on Saturday.

Despite that loss, Chicago outscored Cincinnati 38-14 in the four-game series, which started Thursday with Jake Arrieta’s 16-0 no-hitter.

The Cubs have won six of their seven games against the Reds this season and nine of their last 10 over the last two seasons. Chicago’s record over 19 games is its best since the 1969 team started 14-5.

Hammel (3-0) allowed three hits with two walks and a season-high seven strikeouts.

Cincinnati’s Alfredo Simon (0-2) allowed nine hits and eight runs with one walk and three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. METS 3, BRAVES 2 >> Jacob deGrom made a successful return to the mound after tending to his ill infant son and an injury, pitching the New York Mets past the Atlanta Braves 3-2 Sunday for a three-game sweep.

Back in the rotation after healing from a sore right lat muscle and seeing his son recover from a health concern, deGrom (2-0) gave up one run and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked none and struck out three.

The Mets went 7-2 on a three-city road trip. Atlanta lost its fifth straight game.

Aaron Blair (0-1) allowed three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings in his major league debut. MARLINS 5, GIANTS 4 >> J.T. Realmuto matched his career high with four hits, including a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning, and the Miami Marlins beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Giancarlo Stanton also homered and reached base four times, Christian Yelich drove in two runs, and Dee Gordon and Marcell Ozuna had two hits apiece for Miami.

San Francisco loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth but failed to score. David Phelps got Angel Pagan to ground into a 1-2-3 double play before getting Joe Panik to strike out looking.

Hunter Pence homered for the Giants, who fell to 2-5 on their 10-game homestand.

Realmuto had been hitless in 15 at-bats at AT&T Park before singling twice and doubling off Giants starter Matt Cain. His homer off reliever Josh Osich (0-1) was his first since Sept. 16.

Miami’s Kyle Barraclough (1-0), the fourth of six Miami pitchers, retired three batters for the win.

Puig’s fielding error on a single by Carlos Gonzalez brought in the goahead run in the eighth inning. Gonzalez’s RBI single tied the game, but as Puig reached down, the ball scooted past the right fielder. Gerardo Parra later added a two-run single. CARDINALS 8, PADRES 5 >> Jedd Gyorko homered, tripled and singled, and rookie Aledmys Diaz had a homer among his three hits as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to beat the San Diego Padres 8-5 Sunday to take two of three.

Gyorko, traded from San Diego to St. Louis in December, had two chances to complete the cycle but flied out to left and grounded out to third in his final at-bats. Randal Grichuk had three hits and three RBIs for St. Louis.

San Diego’s bullpen imploded for the second straight game. Kevin Quackenbush allowed consecutive homers to Gyorko and Diaz in the sixth to tie it, and Brandon Maurer (01) gave up three runs in the eighth, including Matt Carpenter’s go-ahead, RBI triple with one out and Grichuk’s two-run double with two outs.

Kevin Siegrest (3-0) pitched the seventh for the win. Trevor Rosenthal pitched the ninth for his fifth save in as many chances. BLUE JAYS 6, A’S 3 >> Jose Bautista hit a two-run homer, Ezequiel Carrera added a solo shot and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Oakland Athletics 6-3 on Sunday.

Josh Donaldson scored twice for Toronto. The Blue Jays, the highest-scoring team in the majors last year, have posted at least five runs for a season-best three games in a row.

Chris Coghlan, Khris Davis, and Josh Reddick each hit solo home runs for the Athletics, who lost their second in a row after winning the previous six.

Recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to make a spot start as Toronto gave its rotation an extra day of rest, righthander Drew Hutchison (10) allowed two runs and four hits in 5 2-3 innings.

Jesse Chavez and Brett Cecil each got two outs, Drew Storen worked the eighth and Roberto Osuna finished for his sixth save.

Eric Surkamp (0-2) allowed six runs and nine hits in 4 2-3 innings. RAYS 8, YANKEES 1 >> Steven Souza Jr. homered twice on his 27th birthday and the Tampa Bay Rays went deep five times in all, finally giving Drew Smyly some run support Sunday in an 8-1 victory over the New York Yankees.

Souza and Corey Dickerson each hit a two-run homer in a five-run first inning against Michael Pineda. Steve Pearce and Logan Forsythe added solo shots to help Tampa Bay prevent a three-game sweep and finish its 3-3 road trip to Boston and New York on a positive note.

Alex Rodriguez exited with stiffness on his left side (oblique) and was sent for an MRI, the Yankees said. Rodriguez drove in New York’s lone run with a fourth-inning double off the top of the left-field fence, then was pulled for a pinch hitter in the sixth.

New York completed a 3-6 homestand and lost for the eighth time in 11 games.

Smyly (1-2) went seven innings in his third consecutive strong start. INDIANS 6, TIGERS 3 >> Francisco Lindor got three hits and the Cleveland Indians overcame an early injury to starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco to beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 Sunday, finishing off a three-game sweep.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus juggled his lineup, leaving slumping Miguel Cabrera and Justin Upton on the bench. A day after Ausmus kept the clubhouse closed for a half-hour after a loss, Detroit dropped its fourth in a row and fell for the seventh time in nine games.

Carrasco and Tigers starter Shane Greene (12) both left the game with injuries in a span of about 15 minutes. Carrasco hurt his right hamstring on an awkward play while covering first base and Greene broke open a blister on his pitching hand.

Trevor Bauer (1-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Cody Allen pitched the ninth for his sixth save. ROYALS 6, ORIOLES 1 >> Yordano Ventura settled down after a shaky first inning, Eric Hosmer homered to continue his hot streak and the Kansas City Royals beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 on Sunday.

Ventura (2-0) allowed his lone run and two of his three hits in the first inning. He wound up going seven, striking out four and improving to 11-1 since he was brought back from Triple-A last July.

Mike Wright (1-2) allowed five runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings for Baltimore.

His final line gave no indicated that most of the sun-splashed afternoon amounted to a pitchers’ duel between two young right-handers who seemed to be in complete control. WHITE SOX 4, RANGERS 1 >> Mat Latos pitched six solid innings for his fourth consecutive win, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Texas Rangers 4-1 on Sunday.
