FRANCONIA >> A member at Indian Valley Country Club, Dawson Anders wanted to put together a better round on the front nine Monday afternoon at the Pennridge Continental Invitational Monday afternoon.

“It was kind of frustrating,” the Souderton senior said. “I was expecting one, two under. It was good round, but just was not great today.”

Anders’ effort was still one of the best of day as the seven Suburban One League Continental Conference teams got together for an early-season session on the links. Anders got a boost from an eagle on the par-5 third hole and carded a 1-over 37, tying him for second with Central Bucks West Luca Jezzeny and helping Souderton ended the day with the second-best team score at 202.

“I think my driver was pretty good, my putting was all right,” Anders said. ”I just didn’t hit as many greens as a usually do. I think I only hit like four today.”

Central Bucks East’s Patrick Sheehan had the best round at IVCC, the sophomore shooting an even-par 36. The Patriots were the only side with a pair of sub40 rounds — Brian McCartan finished with a 3-over 39 — as East collected the best team score at 198.

“Definitely looking for better especially when I had two pretty bad bogies that I shouldn’t of had, especially a three-putt on nine kind hurt,” Sheehan said. “But 36 I can’t be not happy about it.”

Paced by Jezzeny — who tied for 10th at the District 1 Championships in 2015 — CB West was just a shot off tying Souderton for second, taking third with a 203.

“I felt I played pretty solid,” Jezzeny said. “First hole and the fifth hole were the only two little spots where I didn’t play my best, made bogey. And then birdied the last hole to finish strong.”

Central Bucks South, led by 3-over 39 by Jack Lawlor, took fourth at 205. North Penn fin-

ished with a 217 while William Tennent and host Pennridge shot 225 and 240, respectively.

“For this year, the team is sort of in development,” Pennridge junior Michael Simpson said. “We’re just trying to get lower. We lost a lot of really good players, looking to improve on it.”

Simpson paced the Rams’ with a 5-over 41, was satisfied by his score.

“For the first round, I’m pretty happy with it,” he said. “I just had a few holes where I had some missed shots. Overall, I’m pretty happy.”

North Penn senior Ron Robinson tied Ryan Bormann of Tennent for fourthbest round with a two-over 38.

“I starteed off pretty bad,” Robinson said. “Bogeyed three of my first four and my goal was to get as close to par as I could. I made a couple birdies coming in.”

Robinson, who made the PIAA Eastern Regionals as a junior, had a productive summer, winning both the Jock McKenzie Memorial at Sandy Run Country Club and the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Harry Hammond Award and representing GAP at the Williamson Cup in Syracuse, New York.

“My goal is to get to states and hopefully contend at states,” Robinson said. “So I’ve worked really hard on my putting this offseason, try to get that down for states.”

Anders just missed out on states — falling in a playoff for the final spots at regionals — but comes into the season having won both the Montgomery County Junior and Amateur championships in July.

“Felt good to shoot my lowest round ever by like four shots in the first round (of the Amateur),” Anders said. “That was just solid play. And then I feel like I have a lot more in me. I can do that a lot more.”
