An arrest warrant has been issued for a 56-year-old North Wales man facing trial on assault charges for allegedly beating another man with his cane earlier this year after he failed to show up for a required Montgomery County court appearance last month, records indicate.

Gilberto Albelo Colon, of the 100 block of Elm Avenue, faces trial on two counts of second-degree misdemeanor simple assault and one count each of second-degree misdemeanor recklessly endangering another person and summary harassment in connection with the alleged February incident.

Colon failed to appear at a pre-trial conference before Judge Thomas P. Rogers in July, leading to the issuance of the warrant, records show.

Authorities have alleged in an affidavit of probable cause that cops were dispatched to Colon’s apartment shortly after midnight on Feb. 28 for a reported domestic disturbance and encountered Colon outside the residence. Inside, according to the affidavit, officers discovered a man with a large wound to his head and blood streaming down his face, and observed a trail of blood on the floor.

The victim told police that he had been arguing with Colon when, unprovoked, Colon started beating him over the head with his cane and struck the man in the head and body several times, court documents indicate.

Police said the man stated he “was fearful of Colon and that he was afraid he was going to die,” according to the affidavit.

Colon was originally charged with felony aggravated assault in connection with the case, but that count was withdrawn at Whitpain district court when he waived his preliminary hearing in April.

Colon has been free on his own recognizance while awaiting trial, records indicate.
