Time for Toomey and Trump

- Henry O’Hara Skippack, PA

In 2010 I submitted an article in support of Pat Toomey running for election to the United States Senate. I said it was time for “Time for Toomey” to be elected. He was elected and now after his six year term, he is running for re-election while Donald Trump has shaken up the entire Republican Party by defeating numerous other candidates in the primaries and caucuses. During the primaries Toomey endorsed Marco Rubio who later withdrew from the race for the nomination before the Republican convention formally nominated Trump as the Republican nominee for President. Now Toomey is one of a number of candidates who is concerned that Trump will hurt Toomey’s campaign.

During his current term, I remember Toomey tried to fashion a compromise with Joe Manchin, the Democratic senator from West Virginia which would have modified the current gun law. This proposal to work across the aisle was made at risk of his re-election. Because of his willingness to attempt this compromise, I strongly support his reelection. Just as it was time for Time for Toomey to be elected in 2010 it is now Time for Toomey and Trump to be elected together. I would recommend to Trump to openly support Toomey for re-election to the Senate whether or not Toomey formally endorses Trump,

If Trump is elected president he will need the support of a solid Republican like Pat Toomey especially when the Senate considers Supreme Court nomination as well as lower court nominations. Trump has already named a number of possible Supreme Court nominees he would consider for the Scalia seat and possible other seats especially if Ruth Bader Ginsburg or other members of the Court were to retire. The prospect of Hillary Clinton nominating members of the Supreme Court or other federal courts has to be considered as we decide to vote in November.

I did not support Trump initially when the Presidential campaign began with the first of numerous debates months ago. I thought then and still think that Scott Walker, the governor of Wisconsin would make a good President. Walker did not last long in the campaign and while I was disappointed that happened I also thought I could vote for any one of these candidates rather than Hillary Clinton. If the various other candidates for the Republican presidential nomination could not defeat Trump, how could we expect any of them to defeat Hillary Clinton?

With a strong Republican Senate and a continued Republican controlled House of Representatives a President Trump will be forced to moderate many of his outlandish proposals. I don’t believe he will be able to persuade the Congress to build a physical wall on the southern border to stop illegal immigration. I do believe a solid Republican Congress will consider his proposals and create a new policy that will provide for a reasonable revision of the law on immigration. I agree with vigorous enforcement of a revised law against illegal immigration.

I strongly support the evaluation of individuals who want to join us as American citizens who hopefully will be absorbed in the United States as citizens who strongly support the American way of life based on the Constitution and not Sharia law.

Trump named Mike Pence, the governor of Indiana and previously a member of Congress as his Vice-President. Pence is a good choice who can advise Trump how to deal with Congress. I think the TrumpPence team will need a Senator like Toomey re-elected to the Senate. Just as I suggested 6 years ago that it was Time for Toomey, I think it is now Time for Toomey and Trump.
