McGorda, Leyes help Gwynedd Mercy win CSAC title

Monet McGorda (Philadelph­ia/ Cheltenham) finished with 11 points and eight rebounds while Larissa Leyes (Maple Glen/Upper Dublin) scored 10 points as the Gwynedd Mercy University women’s basketball team on its seventh Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) title — and first since 2012 — with a 67-49 victory over Cabrini in the league tournament final last Saturday.

Gwynedd Mercy is at FDUFlorham in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Friday.

• Ryan Connolly (Harleysvil­le/ Souderton Area) became Kutztown men’s basketball all-time leader in career 3-pointers as he scored a team-high 24 points in the Golden Bears’ 91-85 victory over West Chester.

Connolly, a redshirt senior hit seven threes in the contest — one shy of a program single-game record — to stand at 220 career 3-pointers. He also had five rebounds and two assist as Kutztown clinched the outright PSAC

East title with its 16th straight win, the secondlong­est win streak in KU history.

• Christian Walker (Limerick/Kennedy-Kenrick) was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Braves last Saturday after the Baltimore Orioles designated him for assignment last Tuesday. Walker had a .264 batting average and hit 18 home runs for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides last season.

• Lafayette men’s basketball’s Nick Lindner (Doylestown/Germantown Academy) was named to the All-Patriot League third team.

Lindner, the Leopards’ all-time leader in games started with 117 — in second on team in scoring with 13.4 points per game.

• Penn State women’s track and field’s Megan McCloskey (Lower Gwynedd/Germantown Academy) took silver at the Big Ten Indoor Championsh­ips last Saturday with an effort of 51’-7” (15.72 meters), just short of her personal-best mark of 15.75 meters.

Marissa Sheva (Sellersvil­le/Pennridge) placed 10th in the mile (4:53.45) for the Nittany Lions as the PSU women took the Big Ten title with 96.5 points.

• Lycoming’s Shelby Mueller (Collegevil­le/ Spring-Ford) was named the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonweal­th women’s basketball first team. Widener’s Allison Gallagher (Souderton/Souderton Area) and Devon Rimmer (Perkasie/ Pennridge) earned second team and honorable mention, respective­ly with Rimmer named Commonweal­th Rookie of the Year.

Mueller was sixth in the MAC Commonweal­th in points per game (13.2), fifth in rebounds (7.9) and second in field goal percentage (.466).

Gallagher scored 13.0 points per game, led Widener with 5.5 rebounds and also had 1.6 steals per game.

Rimmer led all freshmen in scoring and was fifth in the Commonweal­th in scoring with 13.4 points per game.

Chestnut Hill College women’s lacrosse’s Julia Reinert (Bridgeport/Upper Merion) earned both Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week honors after posting career highs in goals (5), points (7), ground balls (7) and caused turnovers (3) in the Griffins’ 13-12 loss to Kutztown last Saturday.

• Erin Maher (Lansdale/ North Penn) had 14 points and four rebounds while Jessica Kaminski (Philadelph­ia/Archbishop) finished with 10 points, six rebounds and two steals as the Philadelph­ia University women’s basketball team fell to Caldwell 6249 in the opening round of the CACC Tournament last Saturday.

• Vicky Tumasz (North Wales/North Penn) had 10 points, three rebounds and two assists in the Chestnut Hill College women’s basketball team’s 70-53 CACC Tournament opening-round loss to Bloomfield last Saturday.

• Lauren Crisler (North Wales/North Penn) scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the American women’s basketball team beat Loyola (Md.) 66-59 last Saturday.

• Steph Knauer (Hatfield/North Penn) collected 14 points and five rebounds while Lauren Gold (Elkins Park/Abington Friends) had 13 points as the Shippensbu­rg women’s basketball team went 16-0 in PSAC East Division play with a 65-59 win over East Stroudsbur­g last Wednesday.

• Illinois State women’s track and field’s Phoebe Clowser (Lansdale/North Penn) finished fifth in the mile (5:01.47) as the Redbirds took second at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championsh­ips Sunday.

• Ryan McTamney (Roxborough/La Salle) had a career-high 14 points as the Ursinus men’s basketball team fell to Swarthmore 86-66 in the Centennial Conference semifinals last Friday.

Shane Stark (Collegevil­le/La Salle) finished with eight points, five assists, and two steals for UC while Brian Rafferty (Harleysvil­le/Lansdale Catholic) had six points and three assists.

• In Ursinus’ 78-64 win over Johns Hopkins in the conference tournament’s opening round, Zack Quattro (Lansdale/ Hatboro-Horsham) put up 22 points, eight rebounds and three assists, McTamney scored 11 points and Rafferty collected eight points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

• Amber Lambeth (Harleysvil­le/Souderton Area) scored four goals for the third time in five games as the Temple women’s lacrosse team topped Lafayette 18-12 last Saturday.

Brenda McDermott (Harleysvil­le/North Penn) added two goals and three assists for the Owls.

• Penn State baseball’s Mason Nadeau (Lansdale/ North Penn) went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored in the Nittany Lions’ 7-5 win over Xavier last Friday.

• Jared Melone (North Wales/North Penn) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as the West Chester baseball team beat Slipper Rock 9-1 in the first game of a doublehead­er last Saturday at the Division II Baseball Challenge in Dinwiddie, Virginia.
