NP graduate named PSAC East Athlete of the Year

Shippensbu­rg senior and North Penn graduate Stephanie Knauer and California senior Miki Glenn were named the Pennsylvan­ia State Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Athletes of the Year by a vote of the league’s head coaches, the league announced Thursday afternoon in conjunctio­n with the release of the women’s basketball all-conference teams.

Glenn garners the PSAC West Athlete of the Year award for the second consecutiv­e season and is the first PSAC player to accomplish the feat since Shippensbu­rg’s Lauren Beckley in 2008 & 2009. Glenn ranks fourth in school history with 2,007 points and is one of only five active players in NCAA DII with at least 2,000 career points in a career. The Bridgeport, W. Va., native sits fourth in the country with 575 career assists behind a career-best 6.2 assists per game this year. Glenn makes her third appearance as a first-team allconfere­nce representa­tive.

Knauer is the second consecutiv­e Raider to earn the PSAC East Athlete of the Year award after teammate Morgan Griffith accomplish­ed the feat last season. Knauer leads Shippensbu­rg in scoring at 14.0 points per contest. The senior paces the PSAC and is second in DII in field goal percentage (65.5 percent). She making her fourth appearance on an all-conference team, two first-team and two secondteam. Knauer and the Raiders sit at 24-5 this season and will host the PSAC Women’s Basketball Final Four.

Shippensbu­rg’s Kristy Trn was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year while SU became the first team since Gannon (200910) to sweep the divisional schedule. Trn garnered the award in 2013. The Raiders posted an unblemishe­d 16-0 mark against the East, winning 15-of-16 games by double digits. Trn’s team is currently on a 19-game win streak, marking the longest run in her 18-year coaching career. The Raiders lead the PSAC in scoring defense (55.6), field goal percentage (47.2) and assist/turnover ratio (1.27).

Walker on the move again

GOODYEAR, ARIZ. >> The Cincinnati Reds claimed first baseman Christian Walker off waivers from the Atlanta Braves on Monday, bringing him to his third organizati­on in two months.

Walker, a graduate of Kennedy-Kenrick, has spent most of his time in the minors. He appeared in 13 games for Baltimore from 2014-15, going 4 for 27 with a solo homer. The Braves claimed him off waivers last month.

To make space on their 40man roster, the Reds designated reliever Jumbo Diaz for assignment. Diaz, 33, has pitched for the Reds each of the last three seasons. He went 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA in 45 games last year.
