Eagles bring back QB Nick Foles for 2 years

Nick Foles is back, the Eagles agreeing to terms on a two-year contract with the man they never really felt comfortable with as their starting quarterback.

Chase Daniel, who was supposed to backup Sam Bradford, should probably get the rest of his things packed because he’s worth $8 million in salary cap savings if the Eagles trade him. Based on the signing of Foles, the clock is ticking.

The Eagles never totally committed to Foles, now 28. They took him off the board in the third round of the 2012 draft only because they needed a quarterback and blew the opportunity to select Russell Wilson, who came off the board 13 picks ahead of Foles.

Foles was 15-9 with the Eagles from 2012-14 with 46 TD passes

and 16 interceptions. In the middle of his tour with the Birds he tied the NFL single-game record with 7 TD passes against the Oakland Raiders and led the team to its only playoff berth in the last six seasons.

Foles threw 27 TD passes and just two interceptions in 2013, wresting the starting job from oft-injured Michael Vick and prompting then Eagles head coach Chip Kelly to say Foles was his starting quarterback for the next 1,000 years.

Foles guided the Eagles to a 6-2 start the following season before hurting his shoulder. That was it for the highlights.

The Eagles traded Foles, a fourth-round pick and a second-round pick to the St. Louis Rams for Sam Bradford and a fifth-round pick.

Foles went 7-10 with 10 TD passes and 10 interceptions with the Rams and Kansas City the past two years.

Daniel counts $8 million against the salary cap this season unless he’s traded. If the Eagles move him, they get $6 million in cap relief essentially because the team acquiring him would have to pay his base salary.
