Officials still investigating damaged mailboxes
Township to determine whether Michael Way residents are owed compensation
Towamencin residents whose mailboxes were damaged during a snow storm in March have gotten one answer from the township — no reimbursement — but they could soon get another.
Supervisors Chairman Chuck Wilson and Township Manager Rob Ford gave an update Wednesday on a matter that had residents up in arms last month: Whether residents will receive any compensation from the township for mailboxes damaged during snow plowing.
“There are two issues here: one is our mailbox policy in general. Our current policy is that we only
reimburse for mailboxes that are struck directly by a vehicle,” said Wilson.
“If it’s from the throw of the snow, our current policy is that we do not reimburse. So based on that current policy, that letter was sent out,” he said.
During the supervisors’ March 29 meeting, roughly a half-dozen residents
of Michael Way said they saw a snow plow truck driver hit mailboxes in that neighborhood during the snowstorm roughly two weeks before. Resident Laura Kelly of Michael Way said Wednesday she has since received a letter from township staff saying she would not be reimbursed for damage to her mailbox, and asked if that was the township’s final answer.
“We received a letter saying that the determination
was that our mailbox was not directly hit, so we would not be getting any type of reimbursement,” said Kelly.
“I followed up with questions, and never heard back other than that the investigation was ongoing. I’m wondering, is that investigation complete?”
she said.
Those letters were issued per current township policy, Wilson said, but Ford is still investigating whether that decision should be changed for those particular residents.
“In regard to Michael Way, there are some comments that maybe indicated that that was somehow different than the norm,” he said.
“The current letters were sent out per our policy. We’re having an investigation done on Michael Way, which may or may not change that determination,” Wilson said.
