Carangi, Connolly make 6A All-State 3rd Team

NP senior all-state for 2nd straight season

Four area players were selected to the 2016-2017 Pennsylvan­ia Sport Writer Class 6A All-State Girls Basketball Team with Plymouth Whitemarsh junior Taylor O’Brien named to the class’ first team.

Senior Liz O’Leary of District 1 champ Abington made the 6A second team while North Penn senior Sam Carangi and Souderton junior Kate Connolly were both selected to the third team.

O’Brien averaged 22.1 points per game in helping lead the Colonials finish 27-3, reach the district final and earn their first PIAA Tournament berth since 2005. PW advances to the state quarterfin­als before falling to Souderton.

O’Leary, a Delaware commit, posted 13.9 points per game as Abington won its first District 1 title since 2010. The Ghosts reached the PIAA second round and finished 23-6.

Carangi earned allstate honors for the second consecutiv­e season, as the Villanova commit was a 4A second-team pick as a junior. Carangi scored. 7.7 points per game as the Knights (255) qualified for states for a fourth straight year and advances to the 6A quarters.

Connolly — who has verballed to Drexel — collected 10.8 points per game as Souderton (228) advanced to the state semifinals.

Archbishop Wood, which won its second straight PIAA title, had three players named to the Class 5A team while Vikings coach Mike McDonald was named 5A Coach of the Year a season after taking the honor in Class 4A. Wood junior Katie May (9.5 ppg) — who has verballed to Northeaste­rn — was named to the 5A first team, senior Cassie Sebold (8.8 ppg) made the second team while senior Shannon May (7.1) made the third team. Sebold will be at Chestnut Hill College next year with Shannon May attending USciences.

St. Basil senior Natalie Kucowski and Germantown Academy junior Alexa Naessens earned Class 3A all-state honors — Kucowski named to the second team with Naessens selected to the third team.

Kucowski,a 6-2 center headed to Lafayette, averaged 16.2 points per game as the Panthers to a 29-1 mark and Catholic Academies and District /11 subregion champion- ships. St. Basil advances to the PIAA 3A quarters. Naessens — a Colgate verbal commit — put up 9.4 points per game as the Patriots (21-10) shared the Inter-Ac title with Episcopal Academy and reached the PAISAA final.

Abington Friends senior Jade Young made the Class 2A third team. Young, a Hartford commit, scored 13.7 points per game as the Kangaroos won the Friends Schools League title and advanced to the PAISAA semifinals.

Faith Christian senior Ashley Forker was named to the Class 1A second team. Forker, the Lion’s all-time leading scorer, averaged 15.9 points per game as FCA went 18-11, reached the District 1 final and the PIAA second round.
