Thompson, Alfaro carry Lehigh Valley

Jorge Alfaro homered and had three hits, and Jake Thompson allowed just three hits over seven innings as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs defeated the Toledo Mud Hens 1-0 on Sunday.

Pedro Beato got Efren Navarro to fly out with a runner on first to end the game for his third save of the season.

Thompson (1-3) struck out seven to get the win.

The game’s only run was scored in the fourth inning when Alfaro hit a solo home run.

Buck Farmer (0-1) went seven innings, allowing one run and five hits to take the hard-luck loss in the Internatio­nal League game. He also struck out five and walked two.

The Mud Hens were held scoreless for the second time this season, while the IronPigs’ staff recorded their third shutout of the year.

Andrew Pullin doubled twice and singled with two RBIs for Reading.

In the top of the fifth, Reading broke a scoreless tie on a solo home run by Kingery. The Fightin Phils then added a run in the seventh and six in the ninth. In the seventh, Carlos Tocci hit an RBI single, while Malquin Canelo hit a bases-clearing double in the ninth.

Reading starter Shane Watson (2-0) picked up the win after allowing just two hits over five scoreless innings. Opposing starter Cory Taylor (0-2) took the tough loss in the Eastern League game after giving up one run and four hits over five innings. Jesen Therrien pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for his first save of the season.

The Flying Squirrels were blanked for the second time this season.
