NP’s Yanni, Varma win SOL Continenta­l Doubles

SOL CONTINENTA­L DOUBLES >> North Penn’s Frank Yanni and Brijai Varma defeated Dale and Brad Johnson from Central Bucks West 6-4, 6-1 to win the SOL Continenal Doubles title and earn a spot in the District One Tournament Friday at The Tennis Zone in Quakertown.

The Johnson brothers were the two-time defending Continenta­l champions.

HATBORO-HORSHAM 2, QUAKERTOWN 0 >> The Hatters defeated the host Panthers Thursday afternoon behind the bat of senior right fielder Drew Passerini and the right arm of starting pitcher Brian Edgington.

Hatboro scored in the top of the first inning. With one out, Shaun Thomas worked a walk. Courtesy runner Jake Mayson stole second and then scored on a single by Passerini.

The Hatters extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth when Ed- die Schultz walked and advanced to second on a groundout, another groundout advanced Schultz to third, and then he scored on a wild pitch.

Edgington threw a complete game, his sixth in as many starts this year. He struck out five and allowed just two hits and three walks.

On the year, Edgington is 5-1 with a 0.35 ERA. In 40 innings pitched, he has struck out 52 and has allowed 21 hits and five walks.

As a team, the Hatters have allowed 8 total runs in 10 conference games this year. The pitching staff boasts a 1.21 ERA overall and 0.39 ERA in conference games.

HELMAN INVITE >> Host Pennridge had a big night on Thursday, with Griffin McMann throwing to wins in the discus (142-2) and shot put (53-0.25).

Also for the Rams, Matt Ludlow won the triple jump (44-3.75), Vincent Poligano took the high jump (6-4), and on the track, Austin Howell was first in the 800 (1:56.21), Alex Dimon won the 110 hurdles (14.67), and the Pennridge 4x4 was also a winner in 3:24.71.

The Souderton Area boys got a victory from Stephen Scott in the 300 hurdles (38.81), Dock’s Austin Kratz was the 100 dash winner (10.94), Joe Manetta took the 200 (21.96) for Central Bucks West, the Bucks’ Ben Bunch crossed first in the 3,200 (9:40.83) and Noah Griffin went furthest in the long jump (20-9.5), and Hatboro-Horsham’s Kyle Rodriguez threw furthest in the javelin (147-7).

Girls Track

HELMAN INVITE >> Pennridge’s Kouri Peace raced to victories in both the 100 (12.26) and 200 (24.57) for the host Rams Thursday night.

Also for Pennridge, Monika Brill crossed first in the 3,200 (11:20.99) and Juliet Ryan won the 800 (2:19.30).

Souderton Area’s Emily Bonaventur­e won the 1,600 (5:11.72), Big Red’s 4x100 relay (49.27) was tops and Hatboro-Horsham’s Allison Riches cleared 9-6 to win the pole vault.

Wrestling

ALL-STATE ACADEMIC TEAM >> Archbishop Wood senior Alex Shaffer (126), North Penn junior Owen Verespy (220), Wood sophomore Connor Bishop (220) and Wissahicko­n sophomore Brian Fennell (195) each earned Pennsylvan­ia AllState Academic First Team honors.

Shaffer went over the 100-win plateau for the Vikings this past season, finishing his high school career with a mark of 11646.
