Rainstorm postpones playoffs on diamonds
Postseason delayed a day for baseball and softball
Monday’s rain was severe enough to postpone a majority of the District 1 first-round baseball and softball playoff games.
Some of the classifications now plan to start their postseason Tuesday while others will wait until Wednesday.
A number of schools from The Reporter and Times Herald areas hope that these are just the first games of what will prove to be long and successful postseason runs.
Here’s a look at the first round games coming up:
Baseball Class-6A
NO. 19 BENSALEM AT NO. 14 METHACTON >> No. 19 seeded Bensalem will face No. 14 Methacton at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Methacton High School.
The Warriors finished 10-6 in Pioneer Athletic Conference play this season and 13-7 overall. The Owls went 6-6 in Suburban One League National Conference play and 11-7 overall.
Paul Spiewak’s Methacton team should be well-rested and ready for the postseason. The Warriors last game with playoff implications was a 5-4 win over Perkiomen Valley nearly two weeks ago on May 10.
The winner of this game will face No. 3 Spring-Ford Wednesday.
Class-5A
NO. 16 UPPER MERION AT NO. 1 INTERBORO >> No. 16 seeded Upper Merion will take on top-seeded Interboro at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Interboro High School.
The Vikings finished 8-8 in their first season in the Pioneer Athletic Conference and went 9-10 overall to set up a firstround meeting with Interboro from the Del Val League.
Upper Merion went 3-1 in its final four PAC games to earn the final playoff spot in Class5A. The wins came against Upper Perkiomen, Pope John Paul II and Pottstown. The loss was against Phoenixville.
The winner of this game will face the winner of No. 8 WC Rustin and No. 9 Bishop Shanahan Wednesday. NO. 15 WISSAHICKON AT NO. 2 HOLY GHOST PREP >> No. 15 seeded Wissahickon will face No. 2 Holy Ghost Prep at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Ghost Preparatory School.
Ghost finished first in the Bicentennial Athletic League Independence with a 14-2 record.
Wissahickon came in fourth place in the SOL American Conference with an 8-6 league mark.
The Trojans ended their season winning six of their last eight games. Pitcher Logan Willans always gives the team a chance to win and Alex Tap-
pen and Matt Shilling lead the offense.
The winner of this game will face the winner of No. 7 WC Henderson and No. 10 Upper Moreland Wednesday.
Class-4A
NO. 4 OCTORARA AT NO. 1 POPE JOHN PAUL II >> No. 4 Octorara will face No. 1 Pope John Paul II in the District 1 Class-4A semifinals Tuesday at Pope John Paul II high School.
PJP finished the regular season first in the PAC Frontier Division with a 13-3 record.
Octorara finished in the middle of the Ches-Mont League with an 8-11 record.
The winner of this game will face the winner of No. 2 New Hope and No. 3 Lower Moreland in the championship Thursday at 4 p.m. at Plymouth Twp.
Class-2A
NO. 4 BRISTOL AT NO. 1 DOCK MENNONITE >> No. 4 Bristol will take on No. 1 Dock Mennonite in the District 1 Class-2A semifinals Tuesday at Dock Mennonite Academy.
Dock won the BAL Presidents with a 16-1 record and Britol finished fourth in the same league, going 5-10.
When the schools met earlier this month, Dock won, 7-4.
The winner of this game will face the winner of No. 2 Devon Prep vs. No. 3 Calvary Christian in the championship Thursday at 4 p.m. at Widener.
Softball Class-6A
NO. 19 PENNRIDGE AT NO. 14 PENNSBURY >> No. 19 Pennridge will face No. 14 Pennsbury Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Pennsbury High School.
Pennsbury finished third in the SOL National with an 8-4 record and Pennridge was fourth in the SOL Continental at 6-6.
The winner of this game will face No. 3 Coatesville Wednesday.
Class-5A
NO. 12 SPRINGFIELD (D) AT NO. 5 MOUNT ST. JOSEPH >> No. 12 Springfield (D) will face No. 5 Mount St. Joseph Academy at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Mount.
The winner of this game will play the winner of No. 4 Interboro and No. 13 Marple Newtown Friday.
Class-4A
NO. 4 POPE JOHN PAUL II AT NO. 1 UPPER PERKIOMEN >> No. 4 Pope John Paul will take on No. 1 Upper Perkiomen in the District 1 Class4A semifinals Wednesday at Upper Perkiomen High School.
Upper Perk finished 14-2 at the top of the PAC Frontier Division while PJP landed in fourth place at 6-9.
Upper Perk won both meetings between the schools this year — 6-4 in extra innings and 10-0.
The winner of this game will face the winner of No. 2 Villa Maria and No. 3 Nazareth in the championship a week from Wednesday.
Class-3A
NO. 4 ST. BASIL AT NO. 1 DOCK MENNONITE >> No. 4 St. Basil will face No. 1 Dock Mennonite in the District 1 Class3A semifinals Wednesday at Dock Mennonite Academy.
Dock finished third in the BAL Independence standings with a 12-4 record. The Pioneers were 13-6 overall.
Dock is looking to get back on track after struggling to end the season. The No. 1 seed lost four of its final six games.
The winner of this game will face the winner of No. 2 New Hope and No. 3 Springfield (M) in the championship a week from Wednesday.
