A 40-year-old Hatfield Township man has been sent to state prison after convictions in separate drug-dealing and assault cases stemming from two arrests last year by Towamencin and Lansdale police.

Charles Stanley “Nafis” Newman, of the 1000 block of North Broad Street, appeared before Montgomery County Judge Joseph P. Walsh and pleaded guilty to one count of felony possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance in the first case, and was sentenced to 27 months to six years of incarceration, records show.

Newman also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person and criminal mischief in the second case and was sentenced to 1 to 2 years behind bars, to be served concurrently, followed by a year of probation once he’s released from prison.

In the drug case, Towamencin detectives had said in an affidavit of probable cause that after an investigation into Newman’s alleged drug-dealing activities, including at least one controlled buy in which he sold oxycodone pills to a confidential source, Towamencin police — along with Montgomery County detectives and members of the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Local Drug Task Force — raided Newman’s residence with a search warrant in hand on the evening of Sept. 30.

Once inside, law enforcement officers discovered that Newman’s shower was running and suspected heroin was near the shower drain, while Newman was found inside the residence clothed and dry and taken into custody, according to the affidavit.

Police seized from Newman’s

home a 100-count prescription bottle containing 38 oxycodone pills identical to the ones sold during the controlled buy, as well as an envelope containing a cutting agent; stamps bearing the words “Ducati” and “Support” that are typically

used to stamp heroin bags; boxes containing more than 2,200 blue wax paper bags typically used to package heroin; numerous plastic vials containing marijuana; a digital scale with marijuana residue on it and a marijuana grinder; a plastic vial containing three buprenorphine hydrochloride pills (an opiate used to treat opioid addiction); and cash, cellphones and other items,

according to court documents.

Regarding the assault case, Lansdale police said in a criminal complaint that around 1:30 a.m. on July 8, cops went to a second-floor residence on East Fourth Street for a domestic incident in progress and learned from a woman in the home that she had been asleep with her boyfriend when she heard knocking

at her kitchen door that stopped after a couple of minutes, then looked up to see Newman, her former boyfriend, standing in her bedroom.

The woman told police that Newman started punching her in the face and arm, then struck her boyfriend in the nose before running out of the residence, according to the complaint.

Officers observed that the woman’s right eye was injured and that the male victim was bleeding from cuts on his nose.

Investigators determined that Newman had climbed onto the secondfloor roof and pushed in a window air conditioning unit to gain access to the residence.

Prosecutors withdrew numerous additional counts filed in the two cases — including various drug-dealing offenses, criminal trespassing and multiple counts of simple assault — as part of Newman’s plea agreement, court records show.

Newman has been transferred from Montgomery County jail to Graterford prison to serve his sentence, records indicated Friday.
