Harleysville man accused of bank robbery
The man who allegedly robbed the Citizens Bank at 101 W. Main St. in Norristown on Tuesday has been apprehended, and according to court documents, facial recognition technology, media publication and tipsters led to his arrest.
Keynan Marc Robinson, 32, of Harleysville, was arrested Wednesday, just one day after police say he robbed the bank after telling a teller he had a gun and
making off with $479.
According to arresting documents, a man later identified as Robinson entered the bank at approximately 9:34 a.m. Tuesday wearing a neon orange shirt, khaki pants and carrying a blue book bag.
The teller told police the man said, “I got a gun. Put the money in an envelope... Don’t do this, I don’t want to have to hurt you.”
The teller complied and placed money from a cashier’s drawer in an envelope and handed it to him.
He then exited the bank and fled north on Cherry Street.
Video surveillance images of the suspect were sent to a Norristown police intelligence officer who ran the photos through the Pennsylvania Justice Network’s facial recognition program which returned several possible matches, including photos of Robinson, who has a past criminal conviction for receiving stolen property, which prohibited him from possessing a firearm.
Detectives examined the matches and compared
them to the images of the man in the bank surveillance video stills.
They determined that the bank photos most closely resembled Robinson and a tattoo on the left side of the bank robber’s neck matched the location of a tattoo on Robinson’s.
A bank employee who was present at the time of the robbery provided a written statement to police and positively identified Robinson as the bank robber in a photo array
Two tipsters, one of whom saw the bank robber’s image online, and the other whom police identified as an associate of Robinson’s, also positively identified him as the
suspect.
Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, Norristown police announced that the suspect in the robbery was taken into custody in a post on their Facebook page.
Robinson faces charges of bank robbery, robbery with the threat of serious bodily injury, carrying a firearm without a license, receiving stolen property, simple assault and other offenses. He was remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility after failing to post $75,000 bail.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled before District Judge Greg Scott Aug. 24, according to court documents.
