Melvin R. Nice, 89, of Franconia Twp., passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and daughters on Thursday, August 17, 2017. He and his beloved wife Loretta (Wasser) Nice celebrated their 59th wedding anniversar­y this May.

Born in Souderton, he was a son of the late Melvin F. and Lillian M. (Bissey) Nice.

Melvin was self-employed as a builder/carpenter. He was the owner and operator of Melvin R. Nice Builder. Previously, he had worked for his father’s business, Melvin F. Nice & Sons. Melvin took extreme pride in his work. He even built his own home in Souderton in 1957-1958, where he and his wife lived until recently moving to the Peter Becker Community.

Melvin was a member of Zwingli United Church of Christ, Souderton. He also served his country during the Korean conflict in the U.S. Army. An outdoorsma­n, Melvin enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was very active in the Souderton-Harleysvil­le Game, Fish, and Forestry Associatio­n. Melvin was fondly known by his nieces and nephews as “Uncle Jute” and his buddies as “Nails.”

Melvin is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Webb and her husband, Thomas, of Lititz, PA, and Deborah Stetter and her husband, Paul, of Reamstown, PA; four grandchild­ren, Gabrielle, Ella, Peyton, Colin, and his beloved cat Abby. He is preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 11:00 AM in Zwingli United Church of Christ, 350 Wile Avenue, Souderton, PA 18964. The family will receive family and friends from 10:00-11:00 AM prior to the service. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributi­ons may be made to Zwingli United Church of Christ at the above address.
