Emergency crews contain peroxide spill
Surrounding businesses were evacuated, portions of streets closed Friday afternoon
LANSDALE » A peroxide leak was contained in the parking lot of a business complex in the 500 block of North Cannon Avenue Friday, according to acting Lansdale police Chief Michael Trail.
Two hundred gallons of peroxide leaked from a delivery truck that was carrying 2,500 gallons of the substance, Trail said. He declined to name the delivery company and the business that was receiving the peroxide.
Peroxide’s flash point is only 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so the surrounding businesses were evacuated as a safety precaution, according to Trail. No nearby homes were affected.
Responding crews set
up a perimeter around the leak and contained it. A portion of Cannon Avenue and Sixth Street from the north, as well as part of Third Street were closed to traffic Friday afternoon.
Peroxide is an eye and respiratory irritant, but there were no immediate reports of injuries, and there was no public safety concern,
Trail said.
The evacuated businesses — including Boardroom Spirits, Rainbow Restorations, Green Warriors Farms and Bent Metal Customs — remained closed to the public while a private hazmat company completed the cleanup Friday afternoon.
Fairmount, Colmar and Towamencin fire companies, as well as Montgomery County Emergency Service and Lansdale VMSC were among the agencies that responded to the scene.
