Also New To VOD and Streaming
A Dark Song: What at first appears to be a standard-issue occult thriller winds up being dazzlingly original and strangely powerful. Catherine Walker stars as a grieving mother who is sinking into despair following the murder of her son. She becomes so hellbent on making contact with the youngster that she hires a supernatural expert (Steve Oram) and together, locked up in a rented mansion, they descend into the most depraved corners of black magic. “A Dark Song” keeps on springing surprises until it practically reinvents itself as a study of redemption. Prepare to be blown away. On Amazon, Google, iTunes and Vudu The Treasure: Set in post-communist Romania, this deadpan comic gem is about two everyman protagonists (Cuzin Toma, Adrian Purcarescu) who are so strapped for cash, they start digging for what they believe is a lost fortune. Director Corneliu Porumboiu not only offers up a snapshot of life in Bucharest but he gets you rooting for the men as they plan their caper. It’s the wild ending, though, which puts all of “The Treasure” in perspective and gives you something to think about long after the credits roll. On Amazon, Google, iTunes and Vudu Veep - The Complete Sixth Season: The penultimate season of the HBO satire finds former VP and President Selina Meyer (ever-brilliant Julia Louis-Dreyfus) out of office and looking to secure her legacy with a memoir and a library. It’s a different kind of season but just as sharp and hilarious as it’s always been with Selina as self-absorbed as she’s always been. If you can’t get enough of politics, cue up this show which has plenty of fun at the expense of the perpetually power-hungry. On Amazon, Google, iTunes and Vudu Jack Whitehall - Travels With My Father: In an attempt to strengthen his bond with his stodgy father Michael, stand-up comedian Jack Whitehall invites him on a trip across South East Asia. Together, the pair partakes in a series of mishaps and escapades. The comedy – and there’s lots of it - comes from the very different ways Jack and Michael view their misadventures. On Netflix. The Deuce: Season One: The latest from David Simon, who also created “The Wire” and “Treme,” is a look behind the scenes of the porn industry.
