Wissahickon spoils Springfield’s Senior Night
SPRINGFIELD » It was all about an adjustment.
Leading host Springfield by a goal at halftime Wednesday night at Springfield High School, Wissahickon boys soccer coach Stuart Malcolm tried some halftime strategy.
“We figured out we weren’t pressing correctly,” the veteran mentor said. “We talked about getting back to not playing holes in their offense.
“It allowed us to get more possessions. Our guys responded well. I was pleased they were able to put into action what we discussed at halftime.”
It also didn’t hurt that the Trojans got goals from Jacob Cohen, Jacob Kaffey and Eddie Fortescue en route to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Spartans, who found themselves hogtied on Senior Night.
Cohen got the scoring started about 90 seconds into the game, and the Trojans took it from there, ultimately blanking their SOL American.
Cohen got it started, heading in a throw-in just over a minute into the match.
Wissahickon continued to press throughout the remainder of the first half, but came up empty, as the Spartans closed down the Trojans attack.
With their halftime adjustment, the Trojans opened things up in the second half, and got goals from Kaffey and Fortescue to put the match out of reach.
“We knew coming in that Springfield wasn’t going to make playoffs but this was their first time playing on their new turf,” Malcolm said. “This would have been a good time to rest a few players, but that would have been added incentive for them.”
