Styles are always changing, and 2018 isn’t shaping up to be any different. For those looking to sell their houses in the coming year, you might want to make some changes to make sure that your home is keeping up with the times.

The open floor plan

Anyone who has any experience with millennial­s will tell you that they want things their way. When it comes to such a large purchase, they will insist on the things being the way that they want. That’s part of what fuels this big push for the open floor plan. The strict room planning isn’t something that they’ll be concerned with. More likely, they’ll throw out the idea of a convention­al dining room and prefer open space to clearly defined rooms.

Now, I am sure that you’re thinking about how much it would take to make your home

and open floor plan. I’m not saying to renovate your home, I’m telling you might want to think about how you stage it. Let them bring their ideas into it. If you are planning on doing some renovation­s in the next year, you might want to consider how you plan it out to leave a more flexible layout.

The ‘Madmen’ look will fade

The hit TV show “Madmen” on AMC inspired a design revolution with people looking to bring simple designs into their homes. One of the staples of the mid-century modern look is the open floor plan, but the interior design pieces are likely to fade.

Today’s buyers aren’t committed to any specific style. They’re eclecticis­m is likely to manifest just like we see with the open floor plan. They keep the parts the like and abandon others. We’ll likely see the super simplistic furniture abandoned for something that fit’s their needs better.

More and more, we’re seeing people who want to bring color into their homes. This is an interestin­g shift, being that more and more people are opting for a neo-classical style within their homes. Neo-classical isn’t something that you generally associate with colorful patterns.

However, the eclectic nature has put a modern spin on the neo-classical design. The desire to be different is driving people to go for the antique look, but they don’t stop there. They take it a step further and personaliz­e with color.

Wood floors are here to stay

The popularity to wood floors hasn’t waned at all over the past few years. However, they have change in nature. We’ve seen a consistent progressio­n in the width, with the planks getting wider and wider. A few decades ago, it wouldn’t be odd to see an inch or two width. Today when you’re looking at the floor choices we see massively wide planks between 5 and 7 inches seems standard.

The other piece that is changing is the color. For the past few years we’ve seen a love for the traditiona­l wood colors, featuring the deep reds of mahogany and some cedars. This trend is shifting towards low key colors like grey’s and beige. These muted colors will not clash with the brighter colors coming into the home elsewhere.

Simplicity is the word

The days of the massive ornate trims are slowing down considerab­ly. Crown molding used to be a huge status statement, now it seems to be irrelevant to many of the buyers. They’ve moved away from the demand for that. The same goes for the ornate frill and flair on the railings.

The one piece that keeps holding on is the baseboards. People still opt for them, but they are choosing much more simplistic designs. Simplicity is showing up everywhere in the house design.

••• Flexibilit­y and simplicity are the buzz words for designs for the coming year. Nothing that stands out too much in the house, so that you can bring in your furniture to stand out. It’s the easy way to remain non-committal in your home. Your styles can change as easily as changing the furniture. An office can become a bedroom, a bedroom can become an office. It’s as simple as swapping furniture. So, if you’re staging your house, leave some room for imaginatio­n. If you’re looking to remodel, you may want to let simplicity guide the way.
