Ernest M. Johnson of Hilltown.

Ernest M. “Ernie” Johnson, 86, of Hilltown, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 in his residence surrounded by his family.

He was the devoted husband of Joan (Moyer) Johnson, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage.

Born in Hilltown in 1931, he was a son of the late Max G. & Ella (Fonda) Johnson.

Ernie was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean conflict. Following his service, he was employed with American Electronic Laboratories (AEL Industries) in maintenance for 26 years.

Outside of work, Ernie loved photography and woodworking. He was fond of telling stories about taking trips to Lancaster and visiting Shady Maple. Ernie could often be found working outdoors mowing the lawn, maintaining his property, or gardening. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ernie was a very active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, and was proud to have crafted many of the wood pieces there.

Surviving Ernie, in addition to his wife Joan, are their children, David Ernest Johnson, of Sellersville, Dennis Bruce Johnson of Quakertown and Susan J. Smolin (Frank) of Quakertown; their grandchildren, Derek, Heather & Dominique Johnson, and Rachel & Zachary Smolin; their great-grandchildren, Justin, Kayli, Jordan, and Brayden; his brothers Raymond and Donald Johnson; his sisters Elaine and Mary; and many nieces and nephews.

Ernie was preceded in death by his brothers John, Richard, and Robert; and his sister Regina “Dolly.”

Relatives and friends will be received by his family on Monday, January 22 after 9:00 a.m. in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 1530 Augsburg Drive, Hilltown, PA 18927, and are invited to attend his funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Hilltown Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Ernie may be made to his church at the address above.
