2 charged after Hatfield standoff

HATFIELD BOROUGH » Two people are in custody after a five-hour standoff at their home in the 300 block of West Broad Street Wednesday evening, Hatfield Township Police Department said Thursday.

No one was injured and there was no gunfire exchange in the incident that lasted from about 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. after officers were called to assist the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, which was attempting to serve an arrest warrant, police said.

Tamara Person, 37, was charged with resisting arrest in the incident, police said. She also has an active bench warrant from the Superior Court of New Jersey Atlantic Vicinage regarding a burglary charge, police said.

She was arraigned by District Judge Edward Levine in Lansdale.

The judge set bail at $10,000 cash in each case, police said. A preliminar­y hearing before Levine is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. March 14, police said.

Kelly Grater, 46, was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristi­c threats, recklessly endangerin­g another person, possessing instrument­s of crime and resisting arrest, police said. She is currently awaiting arraignmen­t, police said Thursday afternoon.

When sheriff’s deputies tried to serve the arrest warrant, Person pointed a firearm at them, police said.

She and Grater refused multiple commands to come out and surrender, police said.

Surroundin­g homes were evacuated and the Montgomery County SWAT Central Region Team was called in at 4:52 p.m., police said.

Grater and Person were taken into custody by the SWAT team at about 9:35 p.m., police said.

Police from Lansdale Borough, Franconia Township, Montgomery Township, and Souderton Borough department­s, as well as Volunteer Medical Service Corps and Montgomery County Department of Public Safety assisted in the incident, Hatfield Township Police Department said.
