Fox helps Amherst to Sweet Sixteen
Plymouth Meeting resident posts double-double in win over Saint Joseph’s
It was a pretty good week for Amherst sophomore Hannah Fox.
Fox (Penn Charter), a Plymouth Meeting resident, helped the Mammoths win an NESCAC tournament title on Feb. 25, was named a first-team AllNESCAC selection later in the week and had a key role in two wins as Amherst advanced to the Division III Sweet Sixteen for the 11th straight season. In Friday’s 61-12 first round win over Becker, Fox chipped in eight points and a steal.
A day later, Fox led Amherst with 18 points and 11 rebounds, adding an assist as the Mammoths topped Saint Joseph’s (Me.) 53-47.
Fox led Amherst in 3-point shooting percentage (35.9) during the regular season and conference tournament while averaging 11.1 points per game. The 5-foot-7 guard reached double figures 17 times and averaged 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game prior to the NCAA tournament.
USciences topped Jefferson 64-56 on Saturday to win the CACC tournament for the second year in a row. Freshman Irisa Ye (North Penn) scored 11 points off the bench to help the Devils to the title, with USciences also getting 14 points from Jordan Vitelli
(CB South), and three points, six rebounds and two blocks from Laura Trisch (Archbishop Wood).
Jefferson was led by a sizzling 23 points from redshirt
sophomore Alynna Williams (Plymouth Whitemarsh), who also added six rebounds. Jess Kaminski (Wood) had nine points and five rebounds while joining Williams on the alltournament team. Cunningham (Mount St Joseph) had six points for the Rams.
Both Jefferson and USciences will play in the Division II NCAA tournament this weekend.
Villanova senior Alex Louin (Mount St Joseph)
registered 13 points and 11 rebounds in a 63-58 loss to Georgetown in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament on Sunday. The Wildcats (20-8) will now await their postseason fate.
Scranton’s Makenzie Mason (CB West) was a major factor in the Royals’ two wins in the Division III NCAA tournament over the weekend. In Friday’s opener against Keuka, Mason had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five assists with two steals and in Saturday’s win over Cabrini, she posted 16

Whitemarsh) had 16 points and four rebounds in an 8661 loss to Rampao College of New Jersey in the first round of the Division III NCAA tournament on Friday.

rebounds Saturday’s and 97-73 an win assist over in Gerogetown. The Wildcats begin play in the Big East Tournament on Thursday.

Baskin (La Salle) scored his first collegiate goal in Saturday’s 16-9 win over Princeton. Defenseman Jack Rapine (Upper Dublin) had a caused turnover and ground ball for the Blue Jays. In the same game, Princeton sophomore Michael Sowers (Upper Dublin)
notched three goals and three assists. Sowers leads the Tigers with 15 total points in three games, scoring five goals and assisting a team-high 10.
BASEBALL » Virginia freshman Alex Tappen (Wissahickon) went 2-for-8 during a weekend series with Yale. Tappen had a double and drove in two runs in a 5-4 win in the first game, then had a hit and run scored in a 7-6 win in the rubber
match. The freshman has started all 12 games, is hitting .250 and has driven in seven runs. Duke junior Jimmy Herron (La Salle) had a monster weekend in the Blue Devils’ sweep of visiting Cornell. Herron led off Sunday’s 7-2 win with a triple and added doubles in the fourth and sixth innings. For the weekend, the Harlesyville resident hit .545 with four doubles, a triple and scored four runs while drawing three walks.
West Chester junior Jared
Melone (North Penn) was named PSAC East Athlete of the Week on Monday. Melone went 12-for-14 during a 3-0 week for the defending national champions, driving in 10 runs and scoring eight with five extra-base hits. Melone capped his week with a 3-for-4 day, including a three-run home run, in a win over No. 11 Southern New Hampshire.
For the season, Melone is hitting .464 with 12 RBI. Justin Horn (Upper Dublin)
has started all seven games and is batting .320 with eight hits and nine runs scored so far in his freshman season. TRACK AND FIELD » Kutztown sophomore Ryan Benner (Pennridge) etched his name in the school record book at the PSAC champiohships on Feb. 24. Benner, a Sellersville resident, ran a career-best 22.42 in the 200m, good for seventh alltime with the Golden Bears.
Benner also set a PR in the 55m dash on Feb. 16, posting a 6.76. Austin Howell (Pennridge), a freshman at Shippensburg, also performed well at the PSAC meet. Powell placed fourth in the 400m with a 49.61, just missing the PR he set in preliminaries. Howell also ran the 400 leg of the Raiders’ victorious DMR team and helped the 4x400 relay finish second.
