Volunteering allows students to obtain workplace experience
Students from area school districts are gaining valuable workplace experience through a program at The Birches at Arbour Square. The high school engagement program at The Birches has welcomed students into the senior living community to assist the activities department. The students work directly with Asta Fusco, activity director, to learn workplace etiquette, enhance their communication skills, and advance their skill set. They assist residents with activities, such as Wii sports games, trivia and larger daytime social events.
Four students are participating in the program. Mike Rueffer is from North Penn High School. He is a part of the school’s job training program that works with students to prepare them for the workplace. He has been volunteering at the senior community for about two years and comes every day. Caleb Hill, Chelsa King and Giles Lewis are students from Perkiomen Valley High School. They volunteer three times a week.
The high schoolers are bused from their respective schools to the senior community and are often rotated every semester so others can be given the opportunity to improve their skill sets within a workplace environment. Prior to their involvement within The Birches, each student must undergo online training, including fire, safety and evacuation procedures, and residents’ rights.
Persons interested in volunteering, should call Asta Fusco at (215) 541-3707.
