The keys to landscaping for spring

- Maureen Hughes On Real Estate

As March Madness begins, you’re probably paying more attention to basketball than the real estate market, but with this market heating up, now is your time to score big. As the snow melts away, you’ll get a great opportunity to spruce up your home’s curb appeal. That’s your best way to cash out your home’s value this March. So, if you’re looking to sell your home this spring, here are some landscaping tips to make your house look it’s best.

Now, I am not going to sit here and tell you my favorite plants for a garden, even though I could. My personal garden is quite spectacular, if I do say so myself. I want you to make sure your plants work for your climate. There is nothing less appealing than coming up to a bunch of dead plants because they’re meant for a tropical climate. So, make sure you talk to your local nursery and make sure you pick plants that will work for Southeastern Pa. DON’T GO CRAZY Your home doesn’t need to rival the hanging gardens of Babylon, so don’t overdo it. A little bit can go a long way when you’re sprucing up the front of the house. I would always concentrate on cleaning up the stuff that isn’t doing well, rather

than try to over populate a small area. Maybe for your house, it’s just a tree or few shrubs that you’d need.

MAKE SURE YOU CAN TAKE CARE OF IT

This is really more like 2.1 than a whole different point, but it’s important enough for its own slot. One of the biggest things that goes wrong with gardens is overextending yourself. Make sure that you have the time, ability, and desire to take care of your garden properly. If you’re not that committed to taking care of the plants, maybe don’t create a huge garden. If you do, your house will just look like an overgrown jungle (or worse, it’ll die).

KNOW WHERE YOUR WATER WILL RUN

This is a no-brainer but such a no-brainer that most people don’t think about it until it rains. You don’t want your rain water to sit against your house, you want it to run off elsewhere. For this, when you’re setting up a mulch bed, just make sure that the water runs away from the house. You can do this easily, just make sure it has a gentle slope in the direction you’d like it to go.

KEEP THE SHADE IN MIND

When it comes to a perfect sitting area, pay attention to your shade. While you may like basking in the rays as winter slowly dies off, come the long hot days of summer, shade is king. Make sure you pay attention to this when you’re planning a patio.

No matter whether your team plays well during March Madness, you can be sure to get a good result if you get your landscaping in order. If you need some help planning your botanical adventures, you can always get in touch with your local real estate agent. They’ll be sure to point you in the direction of the best of home services. Have fun and get your hands dirty this spring.
