Giant Foods gives $1M to children’s hospitals
Big donation from Giant Food Stores
Giant Food Stores has made a $1 million donation in grants to be divided between three Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The grants have been awarded to: Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn State Children’s Hospital Hershey and Geisinger Medical Center, and will be used for specific needs as identified by each hospital.
Children’s’ Hospital of Philadelphia has been awarded $570,000. The gift will enhance the patient and family experience at all three of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia urgent care sites — in King of Prussia, Glen Mills and Chalfont. The Giant Food Stores Welcome Desk at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia will welcome 10,000 patients from nine specialty programs during the day and 12,225 urgent care visits on nights and weekends, according to a press release.
Penn State Children’s Hospital Hershey has been awarded $280,000 in support of 3D printing and modeling for congenital heart disease. In addition to enhanced clinical care for patients and ongoing clinical research, the use of 3D printed cardiac models will assist medical students and residents in their education about congenital heart disease.
Geisinger Medical Center, located in Danville, has been awarded $150,000 in support of the Child Advocacy Center at Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, so that 100 percent of children referred to the center will receive coordinated forensic interviews, victim advocacy and mental health services as appropriate, according to the release.
“We are honored to mark 95 years of caring for our communities by supporting our partner hospitals of Children’s Miracle Network with these special grants,” said Nicholas Bertram, president of Giant Food Stores. “We passionately believe in giving back, and we are especially committed to the health of our customers and their families.”
In addition to the annual Balloon and Candle in-store campaigns held during the summer and during the holidays, Giant Food Stores associates also volunteer at Children’s Miracle Network hospital events, in-
cluding radio and television telethons. Since 1997, Giant Food Stores has raised more than $42 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
“We are so grateful for Giant’s continued commitment to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and its partnership with our member hospitals,” said John Lauck, president and CEO of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. “We are excited that Giant has identified these hospitals that support their local communities and made an additional commitment to the treatment of sick and injured children.”
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals raises funds and awareness for 170 member hospitals that provide 32 million treatments each year to children across the U.S. and Canada.
Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has raised more than $5 billion, most of it $1 at a time through the charity’s Miracle Balloon icon.
