Carl Giuranna

Carl “Coach” Giuranna peacefully moved on to his eternal life on April 8, 2018.

Carl was born to Massimilia­no and Josephine (Schmizzi) Giuranna on July 17, 1928, in Philadelph­ia. He was a graduate of North Catholic High School, University of Penn and Stanford University. Carl joined the Army after college and met his future wife Claire while stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX.

Carl’s teaching career began at Germantown Academy in 1953 and continued in the North Penn School District from 19541983, where he taught Physical Science, Math and Driver Education.

In addition to his family, the love of Carl’s life was baseball. He played college baseball for the University of Pennsylvan­ia and continued playing profession­al baseball in the Philadelph­ia Athletics and Boston Red Sox farm systems. Carl later worked as a part time scout for the Philadelph­ia Phillies and the Cincinnati Reds.

Carl’s coaching career began at Lansdale High School in 1954 and continued at North Penn High School for 27 years. His North Penn teams won 11 Bux-Mont League championsh­ips. He coached nine players who continued their careers in profession­al baseball.

Carl continued his coaching career at West Chester University for 14 years. He retired to St. Augustine, Florida, where he became the pitching coach at Flagler College. During the summers, Carl coached in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League for the Scranton Wilkes Barre Twins and the Quakertown Blazers. He finished his coaching career in Pennsburg, PA coaching with the Perkiomen Legion and Perkiomen Prep.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Claire Turner Giuranna and five children. Peggy Salvatore (Mark), Barb Dlugolecki (Cas), Mike Giuranna, Mark Giuranna (Mary) and Anne Giuranna. He is also survived by ten grandchild­ren. Chris Salvatore and Monica Salvatore Lombardo, Tim and Phil Dlugolecki, Angela and Mary Giuranna, Kris and Bradley Giuranna and Wilson and Emma Rhodes. He was also blessed with two great-grandchild­ren. Bella Giuranna and Carmine Lombardo.

Carl’s life will be celebrated on Saturday May 5, 2018 at Corpus Christi Church, 900 Sumneytown Pike, Lansdale, PA 19446. Visitation with the family will be held from 9:30 am to 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Central Associatio­n of the Miraculous Medal, 475 East Chelten Avenue, Philadelph­ia, PA 19144 or online at cammonline.org.
