Dock sweeps Berwick in 2A 1st round

- Staff Reports

The Dock Mennonite boys volleyball swept Berwick 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-19) in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A Tournament Tuesday at Bensalem.

The victory advances the District 1 champion Pioneers to the state quarterfinals for second straight season. Dock faces District 3 champ and five-time defending PIAA 2A champ Northeastern 2 p.m. Saturday at Exeter Township High School. Dock (16-4) lost to Northeastern in last year’s state quarters.

In the opening set Tuesday, Dock held a seven-point lead at 20-13 before a Berwick 7-2 run made it 22-20. But strong serving by Ryan Class and a kill by Lincoln Bergey ended Berwick’s run and the first set.

Between sets, Dock regrouped and discussed adjustments that needed to be made. The plan worked as Dock cruised to an easy win in the second set which featured Dock’s trademark scrappy defense and quick transition into

the offensive attack.

In the third set, Dock was able to get some playing time for some of its younger players, hoping the experience builds the confidence of the team of the future.

Dock’s defensive game was led by Connor Derstine with 14 digs, Bergey with 12 digs and Jaden Hunsberger with 10 digs. Hunsberger also had four aces.

Sam Gingerich had a solid all around game with two blocks, four digs, two aces and five kills. Bergey connected offensively to lead the team 16 kills and also had four aces.

Jeremy Yoder kept the attack coming from multiple angles and tallied 31 assists to seven different hitters.
