FIREFLIES: NATURE’S FIREWORKS AT NORRISTOWN FARM PARK

Saturday, June 30: Join a field biologist for an evening to discover the world of fireflies or lightning bugs, which are neither flies nor bugs. Learn about their amazing behavior and life cycle as well as how to distinguis­h different species of fireflies. The program begins just before dusk and ends just after dusk. PUBLICK READING OF THE DECLARATIO­N OF INDEPENDEN­CE

Sunday, July 1: A park ranger in period clothing will perform a reading of the Declaratio­n of Independen­ce at 2 p.m. Before the advent of radio and television important government announceme­nts were read to the public in a common square. Come ready to participat­e in the cheering for Liberty! There will be toasts and musket fire! The reading takes about 90 minutes. Bring a blanket or a folding chair. Meet at the pavilions. In case of rain the event will be moved to the Salt Wing, adjacent to the park office. All ages are welcome to attend this free program. Pre-registrati­on is preferred. FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS

Sunday, July 1: Free health screenings at St. Patrick Church hall, DeKalb and Chestnut streets, Norristown, from noon to 3 The faculty and students from St. Joseph’s University Institute for bioethics, the Sisters of Mercy Health Services and many others have been key players in helping our parish with this important outreach as we have expanded the services provided. Several of our own parishione­rs have been trained as health promoters and do the screening with the help of others. We are continuing to expand the range of services to include referrals to clinics. The goals of this effort are to increase medical knowledge and care, to save lives and to enable better use of hospital resources. The focus is on the underserve­d population­s near us, but we welcome all parishione­rs to come see what’s happening and see if there may be a role for you. Sunday, July 1: Noted opera soprano Toni Marie Palmertree, who is from the Pottstown area, will be the guest performer at the Independen­ce Day celebratio­n service at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 1 at Church of the Holy Spirit, 2871 Barndt Road at the corner of Sumneytown Pike, Harleysvil­le. Palmertree is on summer break from opera tours with the San Francisco and Syracuse Opera companies, where she was recently acclaimed for her role of Cio Cio in Madame Butterfly. OLMC GRANDE FESTA ITALIANA 2018 DATE SET

July 14-July 15: The annual “Grande Festa Italiana” -Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society feast, will be held Saturday, July 14 (4 p.m. to 11 p.m.) and Sunday, July 15 from noon to 10 at 1210 East Ridge Pike in Plymouth Meeting. The event will feature entertainm­ent Saturday night from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. by Ken Battista Band and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4p.m. Jerry Trecroce. Also on Sunday from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. the very popular AM Radio will perform. There will be traditiona­l foods, games, prizes and family fun. New this year is a shuttle service available at the Conte Luna building parking lot with additional parking at JFK Park on Fairfield Road. The celebratio­n will include at 9:45 P.M. Sunday evening with the grand prize drawing of $1000. The highlight of the feast will be on Sunday morning, July 15th, with Mass and the Procession honoring our patroness OLMC beginning at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 454 Fairfield Road in Plymouth Meeting, PA. Monsignor Charles Sangermano, Pastor of Holy Saviour Parish, Norristown will be the Main Celebrant.

NORRISTOWN CONCERT SCHEDULE

CONCERTS: Norristown Recreation Committee announced its summer 2018 concert schedule. Concerts are every Sunday, except where noted, and begin at 7 p.m. at the Fire Chiefs Memorial Bandshell at Elmwood Park. The concert series is sponsored by the Arcadia Foundation. Asterisks indicate the performanc­e is part of the Sounds of Norristown on Thursday nights.

LITERACY COUNCIL OF NORRISTOWN

Are you looking for a meaningful volunteer experience, which will impact the lives of adult learners and their families? If so, LCN needs you! LCN matches adult volunteer tutors with other adults needing help with reading, writing, math, GED preparatio­n or English as a Second Language (ESL). Volunteer tutors attend a 1.5 hour Orientatio­n and 12hour Tutor Training Workshop before being matched with a student. The pair is then expected to meet at a public place twice weekly for 1.5 hours per session for a minimum of six months or until the student goal is met. EDUCATION

Blue Bell School of Dance: 921 Penllyn-Blue Bell Pike, Blue Bell, hosts Argentine Tango Classes and a Milonga dance party every Friday evening. Lessons start at 8:30 p.m. followed by dancing at 9:30 p.m. Andrew Conway, master Argentine Tango dancer, instructor and performer and his partner Linda Chase will instruct. KID’S MOVIE CLUB

Third Saturdays of the month: The Centre Theater will launch the new Kid’s Movie Club on the first floor in a newly renovated space that holds 40 movie-goers. On the third Saturday of every month beginning at 10:30 a.m. children of all ages are invited to the theater to see a special selection free of charge. All children must be accompanie­d by an adult. The Centre Theater is located at 208 DeKalb St. in Norristown. There is free parking on the street and a parking garage less than a hundred yards away from the theater.
