Max Leland Spruell of Lansdale
1933-2018
Max Leland “Lee” Spruell, 85, of Lansdale, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Brittany Pointe Estates after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Mary Ellen Shanko-Spruell.
Born June 13, 1933 in Carrollton, GA, he was the son of the late Cecil Lewis and Bernice (Sherrill) Spruell.
Lee graduated from Georgia Tech University with a degree in textile science.
He was commissioned as an officer in the Navy, where he served, from 1957 – 1960, on a radar picket ship in the Pacific Ocean.
Following his honorable discharge, Lee was employed for many years as the inventory control manager at Betz Laboratories in Trevose, PA.
After retiring, Lee and Mary Ellen built their home in Cape May Beach, where Lee served as head of the Cox Hall Creek restoration project. They hosted the Cape May Beach Chanting and Meditation Group, an affiliate of the international SYDA Foundation.
Lee also faithfully volunteered on a weekly basis at the Cape Regional Medical Center.
Lee was an avid “birder” and he and Mary Ellen spent many winters hiking in the Florida Everglades. Lee and Mary Ellen moved to Brittany Pointe Estates in 2014, where Lee continued his volunteer activities by delivering mail and water to skilled care residents.
Lee is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen, sons, David (Orchida) of Phoenixville, PA and Ronald Shanko of San Francisco, CA; daughters Theresa Logan and Linda Shanko both of Cape May, NJ; grandson, Joseph Spitzer; nieces, Noelinda Cassell (Ed) and Jeanan Davis (Mark); great nieces, Savannah and Adeline; great nephew, Alexander; Mary Ellen’s four brothers and two sisters and their families. He is preceded in death by his daughter Lindalee Spruell and sister Norma Wickersham.
