Popular coffee cafe began as a home brewing company in borough home.

The newest winner of Lansdale’s Business of the Month award is a neighborhood spot to start your day with the perfect cup.

Backyard Beans Coffee Company, located at 408 W. Main St., and owners Matt and Laura Adams were recognized Wednesday night by Economic Development Committee member Bruce Schwartz.

“Nothing’s more satisfying in the morning than a nicely roasted, well-brewed cup of coffee,” said Schwartz.

“And nowhere is there a better place to get that cup of coffee, or iced drink, pastry, or bag of beans, than Lansdale’s own Backyard Beans,” he said.

The company’s motto has been ‘Responsibly sourced, remarkably roasted’ since Matt and Laura started roasting their own coffee beans in 2013 in the backyard of their Lansdale home, thus the name, and the company’s llama logo and mascot comes from the initials for the two, LLA and MA. In addition to their craft roasting business, Backyard Beans has also begun small batch roasting, creating custom flavors similarly to local wineries or breweries, Schwartz said. Their coffee can also be purchased wholesale at local supermarkets including Whole Foods and Wegman’s, and the company is looking to expand their reach into the Washington, D.C., and New York City markets — while still drawing crowds each week in their hometown.

“In between the coffee drinkers and the bean buyers, there is no longer line at the (Lansdale Farmers’) Market each Saturday than at Backyard’s booth,” Schwartz said.

Their cafe, opened last summer, is the most visible part of their business, he added: “not only has it become the go-to for lattes, pour-overs, drips, espressos, mocha or vanilla, coffee or tea or chocolate, iced for a cooling brew, or steaming for a morning kick start - it has quickly become the de-facto go-to meeting place at the crossroads of the new Lansdale downtown.”

The cafe also offers a variety of baked goods, pastries and sandwiches, and after 2 p.m. local beverages including brews from nearby Round Guys Brewery are served, Schwartz said.

“And, frankly, this is the only place I can think of where you can come in and ask for a ‘Punch in the face,’ and leave both satisfied and intact,” he said, referring to a specialty blend of dark roast.

Business is strong enough the owners are looking to expand, both by reconfiguring the current space and looking to other towns for a new location, according to Schwartz, but hope to remain a fixture of the boroughs’s downtown forever.

“He says ‘We want to keep our business in Lansdale,’ and Matt, that makes both of us. There’s nothing better for this town than a home brewed success story,” Schwartz said.

Adams said ever since he and Laura moved to town in 2012, neighbors, borough staff, and customers have all been welcoming and friendly.

“The borough’s been nothing but welcoming, easy to work with, and I really do enjoy doing business in Lansdale,” he said.

“As we grow, we’re going to do everything we can to stay within the borough limits, and just continue to produce close to home, and where we started, where we’ve got our roots,” Adams said.
