Man charged with fleeing from police
Downingtown resident allegedly crashed into vehicle while trying to evade traffic stop
A man fleeing police while attempting to evade a traffic stop had a head-on collision with another vehicle, then fled on foot before being captured several miles away, Hilltown Township Police Department said.
Following the July 28 incident, Antonio Ralph Bell, 36, of the 100 block of Campbell Circle, Downingtown, was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude law officers and accidents involving death or injury while not properly licensed, police said. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending, investigators said.
At about 2:40 p.m. July 28, Bed-
minster Township Police Department tried to stop a white Ford Explorer for a motor vehicle violation on Route 313, police said, but the vehicle fled.
A short time later, Hilltown officers spotted a vehicle matching the description on southbound Callowhill Road approaching Route 113, police said.
The vehicle drove in the opposite lane to get around
vehicles stopped for a red light, then went through the red light and turned right onto southbound Route 113, police said. The driver then attempted to pass other southbound traffic and hit a northbound vehicle headon, police said.
The driver of the Explorer immediately fled on foot, police said. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle, a Ford Transit, were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Quakertown for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said.
A police dog unit and
sightings by passing motorists and residents were used to track Bell, who was taken into custody more than an hour later and several miles from the crash scene by Pennsylvania State Police after a foot pursuit in the Pleasant Meadows section of Hilltown, police said.
Bell was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Regina Armitage, New Britain, and taken to Bucks County Correctional Facility with bail set at 10 percent of $300,000, police said.
Officers from the Bedminster, Dublin, Perkasie,
Pennridge Regional, Quakertown, Richland Township and Pennsylvania State Police departments, along with a police dog unit from Montgomery Township, assisted in the incident, Hilltown Township Police Department said. Chal-Brit Regional EMS, Silverdale Fire Department and Bucks County District Attorney’s office also assisted, police said.
Route 113 between Callowhill Road and Telegraph Road was closed for about five hours for investigation of the crash, police said.
