Structure closed to vehicle traffic several years ago; condition continues to deteriorate
Half a dozen years after the Bergey Mill Road bridge was closed to vehicles, it’s been totally shut down.
Montgomery County officials recently notified that signs have been added to each end of the bridge saying no pedestrians or bicyclists are allowed, Holly Hosterman, assistant to the township manager, said at the July 31 Lower Salford Township Board of Supervisors morning workshop meeting.
“Apparently, it’s deteriorating more,” Hosterman said.
The county-owned bridge was closed in August of 2012, she said.
The bridge over the East Branch of Perkiomen Creek was built in 1893 and rehabilitated in 1985, according to information on bridgehunter.com.
Information given from the county to the township in March of this year, and posted on the township website, said engineering work to replace the bridge was in the works and that a historical and architectural study of the bridge area was being done.
Hosterman said she has asked the county for an update on both the Bergey Mill Road bridge and the Camp Wawa Road bridge, but had not yet received one.
The Camp Wawa Road bridge was closed in July of 2013, she said.
That bridge, which also crosses the East Branch of Perkiomen Creek, was built in 1892 and rehabilitated in 1937 and 1987, according to bridgehunter.com.
The March 2018 information from the county to the township said engineering was beginning for the Camp Wawa Road bridge and was expected to take up to two years.
