- Staff reports

Pennridge (1-3, 0-1) made things interesting with two long Zak Kantor touchdown passes in the third quarter — the first to Jon Post, the second to Shane Hartzell, to pull within 35-20. But the Knights answered with an eight-play, 70 yard drive Haynes finished with a 13-yard TD run at 3:27 in the third.

Souderton 35, Tennent 16

FRANCONIA » Deandre Wakefield’s three touchdown runs helped power Souderton Area to its first win of the season and a 35-16 victory over William Tennent in the Suburban One League Continental Conference opener.

Big Red improved to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference while Tennent dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Continental.

Souderton worked its lead to 21-3 on a three-yard quarterback sneak by Andrew Vince, coming with 10 minutes and 20 seconds left to play.

The Panthers struck back in a hurry, as quarterback Jason Schweizerhof hit Fernando Delgado in stride down the left sideline,

cutting it to 21-10 with 9:37 to go.

But Wakefield refused to go down on a 30-yard, clinching touchdown for Souderton, boosting the margin to 28-10. A six-yard burst by Big Red reserve Jalen White followed by a 10-yard TD pass to Tennent’s Dan Goodz capped the scoring.

Wakefield scored Souderton’s two first-half touchdowns on back-to-back offensive plays for Big Red.

The first came on a nineyard run, breaking a scoreless tie early in the second quarter. And then after an eightplay drive by Tennent culminated with a 35-yard field goal by Dakota Wherrity, Souderton bolted to a 14-3 lead when Wakefield found a seam and was off racing to a 67-yard touchdown run down the right sideline.

Souderton seemingly built its lead up to 20-3 just before the half but had a touchdown called back due to a holding penalty.

Upper Dublin 34, Hatboro-Horsham 7

FORT WASHINGTON » It didn’t seem to matter who was under center for Hatboro-Horsham on Friday, they saw a lot of red.

Upper Dublin’s relentless pass rush gave the three different Hatters quarterbacks almost no time to throw all night. The Cardinals’ line did give Mike Slivka enough time to find Selvin Haynes and that worked out pretty well.

Haynes caught three touchdowns and UD’s defense did its job as the Cardinals topped Hatboro-Horsham 34-7 Friday in their SOL American opener.

Upper Dublin’s defense and the prowess of Selvin Haynes after the catch defined the first half. The Cardinals sacked HH quarterback Will Riemenschneider three times and Jason Scott returned an interception for a touchdown.

The first quarter however was a quiet 12 minutes, with both teams putting together drives that eventually fizzled out. Still, Dylan Zlotnikoff and Mason Novak combined on a sack on the game’s first play, setting an early tone for the Cardinals.

Novak, the Cardinals’ nose tackle, made his presence felt often adding a solo sack, as did linebacker Brody Balasa and edge linebacker Jacob Rossman, who had a sack.

Upper Dublin put together a good drive on its second possession and quarterback Mike Slivka found Haynes for 14 yards on fourth down to extend the drive. A play later, Slivka went back to the senior, who finished the 10-yard play for a touchdown.

On the following Hatters drive, after Rossman dropped Riemenschneider on first down, the UD linebacker got to him again and forced a rushed, hanging pass. Scott got under it and went 38 yards the other way.

UD’s final score came as a result of Haynes’ ability to navigate space. Facing a 2nd-and-31 after a big holding penalty and a sack of Slivka, the junior found Haynes alone over the middle and the wideout turned it into a 49-yard score.

Up 20-0 at the break, UD got the second half kickoff but didn’t do much with it as Cameron Broaddus picked off Slivka.

The Cardinals defense backed up the offense when Micah Bootman picked off a pass a few snaps later, the second of three UD picks on the night.

Haynes completed his hat-trick with 1:52 left in the game on an eight-yard grab from Slivka. The senior, who also plays defense, finished with 88 receiving yards.

The Hatters lone score came when Amir Bookard returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards. Bookard shows some great speed and good moves on the return, which he finished along the left sideline.

Novak got a chance to cap his night with a score when he bullied in from seven yards out with 9:51 left in the game.

WHITEMARSH » Plymouth Whitemarsh picked up its first win of the season Friday night, 28-14, over Wissahickon at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School in the Suburban One League American Conference opener for both teams.

The Colonials got off to a fast start. After forcing a three-and-out, PW capped off a nine-play drive with a two-yard Michael Paciello touchdown run.

Later in the first quarter, Paciello got loose again for a 43-yard touchdown run to give the Colonials a 14-0 lead that would hold through the rest of the first half.

PW rushed for 144 yards in the first quarter alone. Brian Dresnin accounted for 69 yards and Paciello had 65.

Dresnin finished the game with 147 rushing yards, including a 38-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, and Paciello had 72.

Paciello made an impact on the defensive end as well. He grabbed two interceptions in the secondary and returned the second 45 yards to the endzone to give PW a 21-0 lead in the middle of the third quarter.

Wissahickon running back Marice Johnson Jr. finished with 64 rushing yards. Receiver Maurice Willis caught 10 passes for 158 yards, including 39-yard and 34-yard scores from quarterback Nick Santos in the fourth quarter.
