Udinski named SoCon Offensive Player of Week
Reece Udinski (North Wales/ North Penn) was named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week Monday as the sophomore quarterback set Virginia Military Institute (VMI) football records for completions (43), passing attempts (72) and passing yards (491) in the Keydets’ 52-50 loss to Western Carolina last Saturday.
Udinski — the first VMI offensive player to earn the award since 2015 — also threw for four touchdowns passes of 41, 26, 10 and 12 yards while with 491 passing yards was seventh best in SoCon history.
• Alvernia field hockey’s Nicole Heinze (Ambler/Hatboro-Horsham) was named Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week.
Heinze made seven saves on 12 shots as Alvernia won both of its games last week. She stopped four shots in the Golden Wolves’ 1-0 victory over Stockton last Tuesday then has three saves on eight shots as Alvernia won its conference opener 2-1 over Stevenson last Saturday.
• Cabrini women’s volleyball’s Steph Judkins (Perkasie/ Pennridge) earned her secondstraight Atlantic East Conference Offensive Player of the Week while the Cavaliers’ Hannah Dalton
(Abington/Abington) was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week Monday.
Judkins, a sophomore outside hitter, finished with 86 kills as Cabrini went 4-1 last week. She had 11 kills and eight digs in a 3-0 win over Moravian last Tuesday and combined for 40 kills in 3-0 wins over Catholic and Springfield College last Friday — 18 against Catholic, 22 against Springfield.
Last Saturday, Judkins finished with 18 kills and 12 digs in a 3-1 loss to Stockton and 17 kills and five digs in a 3-0 win over FDU-Florham.
Dalton, a freshman middle hitter had 24 total blocks — eight solo — with no block errors last week, collecting 22 of those as she made the All-Tournament Team at the Stockton Ospreys Classic last Friday and Saturday.
Dalton also had 11 kills — four solo, seven assists — in the Cabrini win and ended the week with 28 kills, 16 digs and five aces.
• Neumann University men’s soccer goalkeeper Shane Smith (Plymouth Meeting/Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named Atlantic East Defensive Player of the Week after making 15 save in two games for the Knights last week.
Smith made 10 saves in Neumann’s 3-1 victory over Widener last Wednesday while stopping five shots in a 2-1 loss to York College of Pennsylvania last Saturday.
• Bryn Athyn College women’s cross country’s Natalie Daum (Huntingdon Valley/Academy New Church) was named Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Women’s Runner of the Week for the second time this season Monday.
Daum finished third with a time of 23 minutes, 36.1 seconds — her second-best 5K time of the season — at the Penn State Abington Invitational last Saturday. He finished helped Bryn Athyn place second in team scoring.
• Quarterback Anthony Russo (Doylestown/Archbishop Wood) threw for 112 yards on 7-of-20 passing and also ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter as the Temple football team began American Athletic Conference play with a 31-17 victory over Tulsa last Thursday.
• Rutgers football’s Raheem Blacksheer (Warminster/Archbishop Wood) collected 102 yards and ran for a 14-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Scarlet Knights fell 42-13 to Buffalo last Saturday.
• Victoria Braeunle (Lansdale/North Penn) collected a goal and assist as the Gwynedd Mercy women’s soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Lycoming last Saturday.
Braeunle assisted on the game opening goal at 35:04 in the first then after the break gave the Griffins a 2-0 lead with her teamhigh three goals of the season at 64:34.
• Franklin & Marshall football’s Marlen Fenstermacher (Lansdale/Lansdale Catholic) made an interception in the end zone in double overtime to seal the Diplomats’ 14-7 victory over Susquehanna last Saturday.
Fenstermacher also finished with seven tackles — five solo, two assisted —as F&M improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference.
• Vanderbilt football quarterback Kyle Shurmur (Philadelphia/La Salle) was 18-of-38 passing for 180 yards and a touchdown — a two-yard completion in the second quarter — in the Commodores’ 37-14 loss to South Carolina last Saturday.
• Holy Family women’s volleyball’s Chase Wassel (North Wales/Lansdale Catholic) recorded a match-high 26 kills — her fifth time with 20-plus kills this season — and a teamhigh 15 digs as the Tigers topped Georgian Court 3-2 last Wednesday.
Morgan Silks (Norristown/Archbishop Carroll) had a match-high 54 assists — her fourth time eclipsing 50 assists this season — and added 14 digs for HFU.
Last Friday in a 3-0 win over Caldwell, Wassel had a match-high 18 kills and nine digs while Silks had a match-high 36 assists and seven digs.
• Lafayette field hockey goaltender Sarah Park (Collegeville/Methacton) made 12 saves on 23 shots while Jenn DeLongis (Hatfield/ North Penn) collected an assist on the Leopards’ lone goal in their 3-1 loss to Liberty Sunday.
Park made three saves last Friday as Lafayette topped Drexel 2-1 in overtime.
• Delaware Valley football quarterback Dashawn Darden (Norristown/Cardinal O’Hara) was 13-of-19 passing for 146 yards and four touchdowns — connecting on TD passes of 5, 24, 37 and 15 yards — as the Aggies rolled past Alvernia 41-10 last Saturday.
Darden also added 80 yards rushing on three carries as Delaware Valley won its 14th straight MAC game.
• Keystone College field hockey’s Emily Hawkins (Glenside/Cheltenham) was named to the Colonial State Athletic Conference (CSAC) field hockey Honor Roll after the Giants senior goaltender went 2-1 last week with four saves, a 1.23 goal-against average and a .667 save percentage.
• Drexel women’s soccer Shaelyn McCarty (Doylestown/Central Bucks West) scored her team-leading five goals of the season in the 106th minute to give the Dragons a 2-1 double overtime victory over Charlestown Sunday.
