Dems do impossible — make Trump look good

- Chris Freind Columnist

First of Two Parts

Last week, I delivered a meal to a friend battling brain cancer. A question crossed my mind:

“Does this person give one damn if the doctors trying to save her life drank beer in high school, or smoked pot in college?”

Not a chance in the world. And, clearly, that sentiment would be universal.

So if it’s acceptable that scientists on the cusp of curing cancer – arguably the most important job in the world – had some brews decades ago while underage, even a few too many, then why in hell are United States senators making a debacle out of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh drinking in high school while 17 years old (in a state where the legal drinking age was 18)? Talk about an embarrassing lack of self-awareness.

The Democrats interrogating Mr. Kavanaugh are so outof-line, so hypocritical, and so blatantly political, that they’re doing the impossible: Making Donald Trump look good by comparison.

Along with millions of Americans, I am furious over the Democratic “job interview” of Brett Kavanaugh, when in fact it is nothing more than a despicable witch hunt playing out on the world stage.

The implications of this debate reach far beyond Brett Kavanaugh, Dr. Ford, and even the Supreme Court. Because these issues are of such monumental importance to the future direction of America, this will be a multipart series.

First thing first: It’s time to stop pretending. Let’s for once be adults and cut pretenses that this is about sexual assault or drinking, and have the guts to admit that this entire show boils down to two words. “Hillary lost.” That’s it, plain and simple. In what was supposed to be the easiest election victory of all time – a slam dunk, measure-theWhite-House-curtains affair – a funny thing happened. Donald Trump defied all odds and won. It was a defeat so stinging, so incredulous, so baffling to Democrats that many simply couldn’t process it. Their reaction? Protest, boycott, cry, label the election “illegitimate,” cry, stage school and work walkouts, cry, go to counseling, cry some more, claim Russian collusion (despite zero evidence, to date), go shopping for more tissues, sip lattes while crying, and engage in unrelenting personal warfare against all Republicans, shouting them down at every turn, and forcing them to flee restaurants while dining with friends and family.

Fine. Ignorant and uncivil, but their right to do so.

But what is also a right is the president’s power to nominate whomever he thinks is suited for the Supreme Court. In layman’s terms – to the victor go the spoils. And the biggest spoil of being commander-in-chief is shaping the Supreme Court.

The issue isn’t whether Brett Kavanaugh is qualified, since by every legal measure, he is. The real conundrum for Democrats (who, as the minority, don’t have the votes to stop Kavanaugh on his merits), is figuring out a way to stop him from being confirmed. Give the Democrats credit: They know how to play the game. Despite taking the extreme low road, they are positioning their party to reap benefits either way – at least in their perception.

The Dems know one of two things will happen: A) Kavanaugh will be withdrawn or lose, leaving the GOP with virtually no time to get another nominee confirmed prior to the November elections, or B) Kavanaugh makes it, but the Ds make hay by accusing Republicans of ramrodding a “drunk rapist” through the Senate, hoping to parlay that narrative into a massive November victory.

Sexual assault victims should be outraged at the Democrats who just recently called for an FBI investigation. Why? Not because Dr. Ford isn’t to be believed, but because the Dems’ demand at this late stage makes it political – and therefore makes sexual assault nothing more than a political chess game.

Too many victims, of both genders, have been assaulted over the years, from altar boys to actors/actresses to “everyday” people, to be so callously slapped in the face by such political calculation.

It doesn’t matter whether victims agree with Brett Kavanaugh’s judicial philosophy. That’s a separate issue.

What’s important is that Americans jettison their hyperpartisanship and demand accountability from their elected leaders. And it starts by insisting that Democrats explain why they relegated sexual assault victims to the back burner instead of championing them from the beginning.
