Rams extend McVay, Snead through 2023

-

LOS ANGELES » Coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead have agreed to contract extensions through 2023 with the Los Angeles Rams.

The defending NFC champions announced the deal Friday while veterans reported to training camp in Orange County.

The 33-year-old McVay has engineered a stunning turnaround of the Rams in his two seasons on the job. He took over a franchise with 13 consecutive non-winning seasons and immediately won two NFC West titles while going 24-8 in the regular season.

The Rams reached their first Super Bowl in 17 years last season.

Snead took over the Rams’ front office in 2012 in St. Louis. He built the foundation for McVay’s success by drafting the likes of Aaron Donald, Todd Gurley and Jared Goff.

Giants WR Coleman tears ACL

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. » Just months after trading Odell Beckham Jr. to Cleveland, the New York Giants are being hit by a rash of injuries at wide receiver.

Sterling Shepard, who was to take over from Beckham as the top wideout,

broke his left thumb reaching to catch a pass on Thursday in the first practice of training camp.

The Giants announced Friday morning that receiver/kickoff returner Corey Coleman tore an ACL, a season-ending injury. They said the injury also happened in practice Thursday.

Shepard’s status is week to week.

Henry, Brown leave Titans practice early

NASHVILLE, TENN. » Tennessee running back Derrick Henry and rookie wide receiver A.J. Brown both left practice very early on the first day of the Titans’ training camp.

Coach Mike Vrabel says both Henry and Brown are day to day with the Titans preferring to err on the side of caution.

“Clearly, we’re not going to jeopardize a player’s health,” Vrabel said Friday. “There’s nothing more important than the health of the football team. So we’re not going to jeopardize anybody’s health for one extra rep in practice.”

Vrabel hadn’t met yet with trainer Todd Toricelli but said hopefully both Henry and Brown will get back to contribute this preseason.

Henry, who ran for 1,059 yards last season, departed quietly after a running backs drill during individual work. He did not return. Henry was AFC offensive player of December after running for 625 yards with eight touchdowns on 97 carries, and he is expected to be a major part of the Titans’ offense this season.

Brown is the Titans’ second-round draft choice from Mississippi. The wide receiver’s left leg went out from under him as he slipped running a hitch route during an individual period. He walked inside accompanied by a trainer and did not return. Brown dealt with a hamstring issue late during the offseason program.

Dolphins sign WR Hurns

DAVIE, FLA. » With two receivers returning from serious injuries suffered last season, the Miami Dolphins decided to add a third.

Allen Hurns, mounting a comeback from a gruesome leg injury with the Dallas Cowboys, signed a $3 million, one-year contract Friday to play for his hometown team.

The acquisition bolsters depth at a position hit hard by season-ending injuries last year. Albert Wilson hurt his hip in October and remains limited, and Jakeem Grant is returning from a lower leg injury in November that required surgery.
