New audiobook read by Patrick Stewart, Samuel L. Jackson

-

NEW YORK >> Sir Patrick Stewart, Samuel L. Jackson and Lucy Liu will be among the readers for the audio edition of a new anthology edited in part by the American Civil Liberties Union.

“Fight of the Century” is a collaboration between the ACLU and authors Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman. Timed to the ACLU’s centennial, it includes essays by Salman Rushdie, Jesmyn Ward and dozens of other writers on landmark legal cases, from Roe v. Wade to Brown v. Board of Education.

Other audio narrators will include Michael C. Hall, Alison Pill and Judith Light.

The audio, printed and digital editions of “Fight of the Century” will be published next week by divisions of Simon & Schuster.

NEW YORK >> It’s one sweet day for Mariah Carey: the pop diva, who has co-written 18 of her 19 No. 1 hit songs, will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Joining Carey for the 2020 class are the Neptunes (the duo of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo), former Eurythmics members Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, the Isley Brothers, Rick Nowels, William “Mickey” Stephenson and Steve Miller.

The acts will officially be inducted at the Songwriters Hall’s 51st annual Induction and Awards Dinner on June 11 in New York.

Songwriters are eligible for induction after writing hit songs for at least 20 years.

Carey, whose hits include “We Belong Together” and “Hero,” released her selftitled debut album in 1990. With 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, she is only behind the Beatles, who have had 20 songs top the chart. Her holiday staple, the 25-year-old “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” reached the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 in December and January — making Carey the only artist to have No. 1 hits in the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s.

The only song Carey didn’t write that went to No. 1 was a cover — her version of Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There.”

Virginia-based duo the Neptunes shaped pop and urban radio from the ‘90s well into the 2000s thanks to crafting hits for Britney Spears, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Usher and Beyonc3.

Williams and Hugo, who met in the seventh grade, worked on No. 1 hits such as Nelly’s “Hot In Herre,” Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” and Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot.”
