PHILADELPHIA His back injured in a Wednesday practice, Ben Simmons did not start for the Sixers Thursday in a game against the Brooklyn Nets.
Though there is no schedule for his return, Simmons will be re-evaluated Friday. The Sixers play in Milwaukee Saturday night at 8:30.
“First of all, it was a long, hard practice, and the guys came back (from the All-Star break) great,” Brett Brown said. “It was a play when he went up for a rebound, and I looked over, he left the court, went and got treatment, and it’s played out as it’s played out.”
The Sixers’ characterized Simmons’ issue as lower-back tightness. Raul Neto started in his place at point guard Thursday.
“We don’t believe it is anything too significant,” Brown said. “But the practice was fantastic, one of the best we have had coming back from an All-Star break.”
Simmons played 29 minutes in the AllStar Game Sunday but was healthy enough to practice Wednesday. By Thursday morning, he was still experiencing pain. He received more treatment Thursday afternoon.
“The guys came back from the break focused,” Brown said. “And Ben experienced that.”
Simmons had started 53 of the Sixers’ 55 games, missing two games in November with a shoulder injury.
• • • As expected, Al Horford was out of the starting lineup again Thursday, replaced by Glenn Robinson III. The veteran forward had come off the bench in the Sixers’ previous game, a victory over the Clippers.
Though maintaining his options, Brown indicated he would continue that approach for a while.
“I’m inclined more than not to move forward,” the coach said. “If we’re playing against a big-big team, that could change. But I want to persevere with what you saw against the Clippers.”
Until that Los Angeles game, Horford had not been out of a starting lineup since 20072008, his rookie season.
Brown has stressed that the plan isn’t necessarily to trim Horford’s minutes, but to redistribute them with a continued commitment
