Hoping to start your own book club? Here are some tips from people who have successfully gathered a group of readers for social and enlightening discussions.

Partner with a bookstore: Towne Center Books offers discounts on books for clubs that meet at the store. They also help promote the clubs through email, social media and shop displays.

Host a Meetup group: Norristown resident Adrian Alexander turned to Meetup to create his classics book club and connect with other readers interested in tackling literary masterpieces.

Volunteer to lead a library discussion group: At Phoenixville Public Library, volunteers help organize meetings, moderate discussions and recommend selections. Spread the word: Melanie Busby drew attendees to her first Purple Pallet Book Club meetings last year by distributing postcards and posting on Facebook.

Make it fun: Busby combines crafts with each book discussion, providing creative activities that encourage members to socialize. Meet at a pub: Gathering at a pub “promotes participation and a relaxing atmosphere” that enhances book discussions, said Phoenixville Public Library Director of Adult Services Mark Pinto.

Keep it democratic: Christine Shaffer, who leads Phoenixville Public Library’s Books on Tap, emails periodic Survey Monkey polls to club members with lists of possible reads, so everyone can weigh in on future selections.

Encourage open discussion: “A good book club is one where all people really value each other’s contributions. There’s a willingness to hear each other out,” said Sarah Danforth, general manager of Towne Center Books.

Consider naming a moderator: A moderator helps keep discussions on track and, often, provides questions that promote debate, Danforth said.

Do it your way: “Just be free about it,” said Busby. “There’s no right or wrong way to start or lead a book club.”
