Deep Run holds on Offense keeps it going against H-T

- By Kev Hunter khunter@21st-centurymedia.com

Deep Run had just 10 players available Saturday night.

Gabe Daubert contributed two hits despite an injured wrist.

And the visitors held off a pair of rallies by Hatfield-Towamencin to grab a key win at School Road Park.

“I’m very happy we got this,” said third baseman A.J. Newer, who reached base three times and knocked in a pair of runs. “Jaden (Morgan) pitched a great game (in relief) under a lot of pressure. Eric Bergey did a great job behind the plate too.

“We were a little shorthanded — we didn’t have a lot of guys. Everyone was hitting the ball tonight. It wasn’t a solo effort tonight. Everyone did their job.” “Great game,” added Bergey. Deep Run’s 7-6 victory over the Titans raised its record to 8-5-1 on the season, going into its 1 p.m. game at Nor-Gwyn Sunday. The Titans, who host Fort Washington Monday at 8 p.m., dropped to 10-5.

“We had a great start,” Newer said. “They’re a pretty tough team, and a 4-0 start definitely helped us.”

QUICK START » Deep Run took a 3-0 lead in the first, keyed by RBI singles by Jaden Morgan and

Newer.

Deep Run added to the lead in the second, as Owen Gunn drove one in to widen the margin to 4-0.

BACK AND FORTH » The Titans came to life in the bottom half.

Jack Picozzi got things started with a double.

Justin Egner’s two-run double cut the deficit in half, and James Mangini’s grounder tightened things to 4-3.

Newer again came through for Deep Run in the third, his RBI single increasing the visitors’ lead to 5-3, but then Hatfield-Towamencin drew three straight walks to begin their next atbat, leading to another run and a 5-4 margin.

Daubert singled in a run in the fourth for Deep Run to make it 6-4, and a combination of walks and errors helped the visitors inflate the lead to 7-4 in the fifth.

But the Titans had one last charge left.

Aidan Hoy drew a twoout walk in the fifth and Quinn Marrett followed with a double. Zach Riddle walked to load the bases and a wild pitch allowed Hoy to race home.

Things tightened to 7-6 when Jack Picozzi lofted an RBI single to right.

But Morgan came on to get the final out, then kept the Titans scoreless in the sixth and seventh. He struck out six along the way.

“We’re very confident going towards the playoffs,” Newer said. “I love these guys — great teammates. They all do their job.”
